final thoughts on breakdown

Post by David/Diane McMunn » Thu Oct 05, 2000 8:44 pm

As a followup to my previous note, I would like to add a couple of thoughts. Rather than buy the special tool to hold the rotor, I bought a cheap ($9) 1 1/4 in open/box wrench. I then heated and made 2 L-shaped bends to match the shape needed to hold the rotor. It worked great. The tips and tech articles available here and archived were invaluable. If Kawasaki made a better shop manual (like maybe Honda?), I wouldn't have searched for so much info. However, we're very fortunate that the KLR experts have shared their knowledge. I did find out that Kawasaki would likely have warrantied the broken spring, but I would have paid a lot of shop labor up front that would not likely have been reimbursed. So I was better off buying the $3 spring and $40 worth of gaskets and fixing it myself. The factory warranty ran out in May. Now I have it all back together just in time to put it away for the winter! Oh well, at least it seems sound and ready to go next year. Thanks again to those who replied to my problem. Dave

final thoughts on breakdown

Reply to: RE: [DSN_klr650] Final thoughts on breakdown I Just got a 1987 KLR 650 to bomb around the streets of Manhattan. I am very excited to get out of the subway once and for all. Glad to be in this e-group too. Bowman Kelley

You will probably never
> see a bear while riding a motorcycle. At least not very close to
you, you
> might see one off in the distance. The noise is just to much for
them. I'm just lucky, I guess. Coming down the south side of Horse Creek Pass (Idaho/MT border) in August 99 I was surprised upon reaching the bottom of the canyon to see an apsen tree shaking violently, while al the others were still. All of a sudden A large black bear jumped out of it and ran across the road directly in front of me. Scared me for a second! I don't think he liked the KLR's noisy motor.
