klr650 foot crank
Has anyone out there installed a foot crank on their KLR650 ? A mechanic tells me it can be done easily. Sounds like it could come in hand sometime. If it can be done, how difficult is it ?

Hi Steve: I'll be watching for any answer indicating there is such a thing
for post 1995 models. I have asked a similar question and been told that a
kick start kit was available from Kawasaki for models up to 1995 and that kit
won't work on newer models. If you have an older model, the Kawa part #
99-995-1007. I understand they are nearly impossible to find anymore --
unless used. I would love to have one for the newer models to use on my
upcoming intercontinental tour. Maybe one of these genius engineers will come
up with one. They are always coming up with something else new we can spend
our money on. Good luck.

Foot crank <-> Kick starter
Yes, I have one. When I first decided I wanted a KLR, that was one of the options I required. I searched out a dealer that would install one. I ended up buying a 1990 KLR. Well worth the extra money.
I.E., within 3 months of that 1st KLR, a cell in the batt went dead. It was under warenty, and the dealer said I can drop off the bike now and they would get to it by Thursday of nest week. 'Forget you' was my responce, I'll bring it in next Thursday and you can look at it then. I ended up kickstarting the bike for a week, and yes, it was the batt, they replaced it free of charge.
The other times I use the kickstarter is when the die hard DP riders give me a hard time about the electric start DP, and I proceed to start up (one kick) with the kickstarter.
I have had some other problems envolving low batt voltages and end up using the kickstarter to get the bike running. In my opinion, the foot crank option is well worth it.
NOTE: 1995 KLR is the last year to fit the optional kickstarter, as the clutch basket is now smaller in dia. (the kickstarter teeth won't reach) and a bit beafer.
I'm on my second KLR, having put 65,000 miles on the first. I sought out a 1995 to be able to swap out the kickstarter assembly.

Has anyone ever needed a kick starter on their KLR? How hard is it to crank with the kicker?
Does Mr. Elden Carl have a kick starter on any of his KLRs?

was your mobil old and tired? i always find new oil has this effect for a
while . ..

ease
knowing the fact that these engines are noisy by design. I do tend to get
sickly into diagnostics and preventive maintenance beyond what is required.

One more thing. After switching from Mobil 1 15w-50 synthetic to Honda HP
20w-50; gear shifting is a lot smoother and even quieter.
