It's turning cold here in the Northeast and it's a bit too breezy on
my new KLR. I see that Kawasaki makes a larger windshield for around
$80. I've also seen references to a Clearview? What's that, and
where would I buy it? Is that any better than Kawasaki's?

I've got the Kaw tall windshield and the Rifle tallest windshiled. The Kaw
will reduce body blow but puts it right in your face. The Rifle (the
tallest one) really cuts down on body blow and wind in the face but it
flaps around so much I would not think of taking it off pavement. When I
got my Rifle, Clearview was not making their tall shield for the Kaw
anymore but I have heard that they have worked out a new, sturdier design
that has received high praise from long distance travelers.
BTW, I live in the San Diego area so I only have a few hours a year to
check performance in cold weather (LOL).

Clearview makes a heavy duty windshield for around $120. It is 11" higher
than stock, and worked well for me on long trips. A bit of bad news -
after 23,000 miles of riding mostly high speeds (lots of wind
buffeting) the righthand mount tab fractured on the shield. This is the
second time I've had a fracture, but the first one broke on both sides
since it was a lesser gauge Lucite. I'm still happy with Clearview because
it held up to some rough handling and some falls at Moab, but it was on a
smooth windy highway when the thing fractured.

I have not heard the new system on a KLR. When I got there it was set up on
an otherwise stock XR600. I started my KLR with 6 plates (IDS) on one side
of Steve's parking lot and the XR on the other. Revving it a bit I could not
hear a heck of a difference in overall loudness. I know he measured it in
drive-by and standing still so I'll check with him and get his measurements.
The KLR comes with a piece of insulation behind that side panel. Mine came
off so I got a piece from Dennis Kirk for $11.00. Steve and I talked about
mounting location and he said that with the poor fit and finish of Kawi's
panels (3/8" off on mine at the back of that panel) that it was tough to get
anything very precise and make it look like it is supposed to be there. I
have more pictures of it close up and to the side if anyone is interested.
He is planning on making a superlight model for racing and one for normal
use that has a double wall design that should keep it relatively cool.
Overall, he has done his homework big time and I can heartily recommend his
products. And that's not just because he's going to give me the pipe for
free when it's released
I think it will be a definite competitor for the ProDuro, Trapp and Big Gun
systems.
