David, there have been several impressive studies completed recently. One
was published by the BMW ON magazine the other by Motorcycle Consumer News.
They even tested my beloved Valvoline Premium Blue. I suppose many people
could view the same results and come to different conclusions. The way I saw
it....the best results came from motorcycle specific oils...Golden Spectro
to be exact. But Mobil I in any of its three formulations came out very
well. The new "tri-synthetic" version of Mobil I came out wors of the three.
So, the choice is yours....My Valvoline came out about middle of the road
along with Gino's Castrol GTX...I would suggest Mobil I in any formulation
except tri-synthetic...

engine oil????
I'll probably get shot for this, but I have been using Kawi 4 stroke 20W/50 since I bought the bike new. Not too expensive and is convienent to pick up when I go to the dealer to get new oil filter. I change my oil every 500 to 800 miles. I have 4,300 miles on the bike now, and just changed the oil about 100 miles ago. This has been the first occasion that I have noticed the bike is shifting a little more harshly than in the past. Maybe it's time to change to a different type of oil? Any suggestions? (there's a loaded question).

I'm with you. When I had a Harley, I used Harley oil. Now that I
have
a Kawasaki, I use Kawasaki oil. It's a no-brainer and I don't see
what the fuss is and why so much energy is wasted on this topic.
Seems
to me if people spent as much time riding as they did worrying about
what kind of oil they used, there'd be a lot of motorcycles out there
with 100,000 miles on 'em

Hi,
KLR 250 Silkolene Pro4, Silky smooth transmision. $35 gal change at 1000miles
KLR 650 Motul 6100 semi synthetic, changing to Belray EXS. (easier to get
here)
Fit a magnetic sump plug you will be surprised but it keeps the life blood
clean and will pick up anything that chips or is ABOUT to break.

Any of the 'blend' oils. Part dino/part synthetic.. like Valvoline

I seem to get the improved shifting and quieter noise level at a
acceptable price IMO. And I change it at 3K miles except the KLX
which
as a dirt bike gets it changed more often.
I have 69K miles on the '98 Kaw Concours, 8K miles on the KLR '00
and
a lot of trails on the KLX! Hee hee!

engine oil????
To list: What is the highest odometer reading on a KLR 650 known to anyone in
this group? What is the greatest number of miles on a KLR 650 before major
engine work was required? I talked to one owner of his second KLR 650 who had
20 something thousand miles on his current ride and had 83,000 on his old
one. He said he met someone who had over 90,000 on one. This 70 something
years old guy, whom I met at Daytona Bike Week 2000, also has one of the BMW
1100 models and prefers the KLR 650. I met him camping with a group of BMW
riders. I was thoroughly surprised to hear he and another 70 something BMW
rider with 100s of thousands of miles on their patches agree that I had
chosen a great bike to use for my tour. No bias toward their BMWs.

carb. mods. for high altitudes
Lew,
I don't how bad the fuel is in South America, but in Tibet (15,000 ft)
we filled up with 70 octane gas. The bikes continued to run just fine.
I was surprised.
