help, engine "surging"
Hey everyone, nice to have the digest back.
Hope someone can offer some suggestions to my latest problems with my
650. I am noticing some surging while I am travelling at a consistent
speed on the highway. I can feel it in the bars almost like a gust of
a head wind gets your attention.
I am trying to determine if this might be fuel or ignition related.
I want to get advice on methods of trouble shooting before I go
panicing. It has been doing this for about 3 weeks or so since I have
noticed it.
What I have done.
-About 2 weeks ago I did a valve adjustment changing all four shims.
(very careful to double check my reassembly)
-A month or so ago I installed an inline fuel filter. I did a fair
amount of riding right after that and the surging wasn't happening.
-I have been to different gas stations during that time.
-Bike has 2200 miles on it, Y2K model.
I run high octane in it.
Symptoms-
-I can let off the throttle and then grab a handful while cruising on
the highway and it won't stutter at all.
-It idles smoothly, as smooth as a KLR can.
-I can run it hard up through the gears and not notice and hesitation.
-While it is "missing" I try to get a peek at the tach at around 60
mph, I don't notice any obvious jumping of the tach needle.
What I was thinking of doing.
-Dry gas (isopropyl) Is this okay to add a little to the tank? Maybe
it is ONLY water in the tank.
-Run the gas out of the tank and check that the screen isn't blocked.
Is there a screen in the petcock?
-Put a new piece of fuel line in without an inline filter. Maybe it
is some kind of fuel deprivation prob.
Gentlemen (and ladies, I know there are a few on the list) Your
suggestions please.
Please don't tell me it is an internal carb problem. Carburetors and
me don't get along. (even with a good tutorial)
Thanks, Robb
Off list replies are fine too.
