Joel: I have Kawa soft bags, but had this nagging thought in the back of my mind about the lack of security. I just ordered Tim Bernard's lockable aluminum panniers and Mondo tail box to solve that problem. I will still have some less valuable and easier to replace things in soft tank bag, duffle bag, tank panniers and fender bag. I feel I must be ready for all eventualities and weather conditions from the arctic to the deserts, mountains, rainy tropics and humid jungles including fording rivers occasionally. I have a 6 foot heavy cable lock, disk lock and security alarm. I always thought going solo was an unfriendly way to travel, but I don't want to deal with one or more people and their personalities, quirks, and desires to do something different from I do. I want to do what I want, when I want. I'm willing to risk the lack of security a loner must live or die with. Punky will be my traveling partner and he won't complain, although I'm sure there will be many times when I will be complaining of the hair-brained scheme that is sure to get me in countless messes wishing I were elsewhere chugging a cold one or resting warmly in the comfort of home. Ah but, this is the stuff dreams are made of and I'm sure there will be countless once-in-a-lifetime experiences that will never be forgotten and often talked about for the rest of my mundane life. Damn, I wish I could go tomorrow. Lew Waterman Punky & Lew's Americas Motopaseo

Joel: By the way, I lived in Mexico for most of the 1970s and learned Spanish then. I have 2 tiny electronic Spanish/English/German/French/Italian and Portugues/English translators made by Franklin. Lew Waterman Punky & Lew's Americas Motopaseo

Joel: Mi Espanol es muy malo, pero mejor que nada after about 20 years of not using it. When I get immersed in it I am sure it will come back quickly. Portuguese is another thing. In Brazil most of them will understand Spanish, but when they reply in Portuguese I will probably have to resort to using the Franklin translator until I get used to it. There are a lot of similarities between Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. I will also have to use the Franklin translator in French Guiana where French is spoken. From my research it seems that few if any motorcycle tours have included Guyana. Suriname and French Guiana. Roads in and out of these countries to Brazil and Venezuela are very limited. It should have been BMW Dual Sport Bikes.

Not BMW Duel Sport.  Although they do duel it out.
