1) Except for severe weather, I'd be riding it about 10 months out of the year. (Fortunately, I only work 2 miles from home). How is the KLR in the winter? Starts okay? Will my seat crack when frozen?
Any cold-weather or moisture-related concerns I should be aware of?
Sorry, can't answer as I live in tropical northern-central California, cold here is 25F. But I have never had an issue down to that temp. other than freezing at speed :^).
2) The front brake is much maligned... ...Can the KLR's front brake be fixed with a braided steel brake line and new pads? Or, must one buy the $365 MAP Engineering disk to get "normal" front braking performance.
I found only the KLR dive an issue: When grabbing a great hand-full of front brakes, the forks seem to get silly. I installed progressive springs (with the stock spacer length) and all issues went away. IN FACT, I think I have managed the first KLR stoppie the other day, on accident of course, but I did lift the back tire in a parking lot at about 15 MPH. I was teaching my brother in law the effects of mashing the front brake and it happened.
>3) Finally, does anyone know what the dealer invoice is on an '01 KLR? I've never bought a new bike, nor do I know how willing dealers are to discount. Any bargaining tips would be most appreciated.
I would take a look at the bluebook, mashed with the popularity in the local area of the KLR. Offer a silly low amount, let him come back with a counter offer. Look for parts counter toss-ins, You will need an helmet, bags, jacket, etc. Try for freebies or discounts to make the deal sweet. Or not.
>Looking forward to riding again (on my new KLR),
As you should: Life begins at 40 and a new KLR! :^)
