You are correct, I am not sure how I started into SplitFires from Direct Hit. Doh!!! Anyway, the SplitFire plugs were those forked element devils (remember how they cut the element in half at the end). I remember watching the spark in these and every few cycles the spark seemed to split between the element halves but most of the time it seemed to be one side or the other. The fact that the element had been physically split is what supposedly made them weak and prone to fracture. Sorry about the confusion. Chuck A14

Hi Tom,
Hehehe. I laughed at first too until my buddy badgered me into trying one.
I think Rev. Chuck is right about the things just being capacitors of some
kind. There's nothing magic about them, but I do know my DH helped my gas
mileage and increased my idle speed by about 300rpm.
The DH seemed to make the bike a little stronger but again, the "seat of the
pants" dyno can be deceptive. You never know if the bike really makes more
power, or you just think(or wish) it does, until you measure its output.

Hi Rev.
I'm not used to seeing your new e-mail name yet. I was thinking "who the
heck is Chuck MacKarness" 'til I saw the signature.
I think you're right about the DH being some sort of capacitor. I don't
really know why it works, and it certainly isn't magic, but it seems to work
for me. BTW, the original plug in the A13 is a non-resistor type in U.S.
models.

You can't create energy from nothing, but always can change it to another form: heat and entropy are the products here. The installation instructions indicate replacing the resistor plugs with a non-resistor flavor. Alone that would increase the arc intensity. > Not a bad idea though, nor is opting for a high output coil. > > A nickel's worth of free opinion. > > == > Rev. On the way there (about 800 mi) i was on back roads most of the way.
Probably averaged 45 mph (guessing). Top speeds up to 75 while in the
desert on the freeway (still quite miserable). On the way back (about 600
mi) I took freeway most of the way and probably averaged 65 - 70 mph.
While there (about 200 mi) I was on local roads and fire trails and
probably averaged 25 - 30 mph.

Oh yea...washing will help remove turbulent flow from the bikes
surface and make you slip through the air.
I noticed a bigger improvement in acceleration after I shaved my legs
and donned bicycling shorts.

Please feel free to berate these observations and flame me at will. I
laughed too. But for $25 US, I don't think any of my mods to date have
returned better rewards.

On the issue of no advertising. With Arne's support Dual Sport News will
pick-up the tab for the monthly fee to remove adds on the KLR list. Because
our budget remains tight (we're depending on subscriber growth) we welcome

On another note, Bill Haycock is stepping down from his post as webmaster on
the www.dualsport.org website. I ho you will join me in sending Bill a note
of appreciation for the incredible service he has provided. Bill can be
reached at mailto:whaycoc@... (to my knowledge, Bill is not on the
KLR list).
With Bill's departure, Ron LaMantia (DSN's reclusive publisher) and I are
wanting to take the website in new directions. We would invite the emerging
KLR group to continue to think of the Dual Sport News website as "home" and
would welcome suggestions (please send off-list) to that effect.
BTW, Ron mailed a two-issue set of Dual Sport News on Monday and included a
bonus transcript of Elden Carl's last live internet chat.
