"punky n lew's americas motopaseo"/kickstart question

I am planning a 24 country adventure tour of N./S. Americas for 2-3 years. I will be accompanied by my Yorkie dog "Punky" on a KLR 650 on what I have dubbed "Punky n Lew's Americas Motopaseo." We will be departing South Florida May or June 1, 2001, heading north to Labrador/Newfoundland, then west with stops in Yellowknife and Inuvik, Northwest Territories to Point Barrow, Alaska before heading south to Ushuaia/Tierra del Fuego, Argentina and all of S. America. I am currently gathering all the gear and accessories required for the trip. It will be interesting to see how much of this pile of stuff actually fits on the bike, which I do not have yet (bikes not allowed where I live). Does anybody know if a kick start kit meant for pre-1996 KLR 650s can be used on or adapted easily to a 1996 or newer KLR 650? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Please respond via e-mail.
