[dsn_klr650] noisy front end or noisy something
Check the axle. Mine was loose when I brought the bike home from the shop
brand new. It was clunking when I was testing the brake.

Time to tap into the knowledge and experience of this group again. You guys
are awesome and it's appreciated.
I have a 98 KLR that I purchased with about 6,000 miles on it. The bike was
immaculate and according to the previous owner, never ridden off road. If
you saw the bike you'd believe it. The bike is completely stock accept for
some new Maxxis tires that made a big difference in the off road riding. I
plan to do some more of the necessary mods this winter (i.e., skid plate,
fork brace, radiator guard, etc.). I do however have an immediate concern
about the front end. I do some pretty hard riding up here in New England.
Lots of rocks, ruts, fallen trees, stumps, etc. Lately the front end is
giving me a clunking feeling through the handlbars almost as though my front
end is loose. Last night some of my riding buddies picked up the front of
the bike and gave it a shake. They assured me it's not the front end. Some
suggested maybe the front brake caliper, maybe sloppy springs or maybe just
other stuff shaking around. I'm definitely feeling something and it's got
me
a little concerned.
I go about 260 lbs. We ride pretty hard. Most of the guys in the group are
on XR650s, DR650s or KLX650s so you get the picture.
Has anybody had a similar experience with the front end? Is there something
else that might be loose that's causing the clunking sensation in the
handlebars while I'm riding real rough or on washboard terrain? Is it just
all the "stuff" that's mounted up front (speedometer, tachometer, fairing,
headlight, etc.)? Could it be the radiator or reservoir shaking loose? Is
there some other things mounted underneath that I can't see that should be
looked at? Or finally, am I just being paranoid?
I'm about ready to go to my trusted after hours mechanic for an opinion. We
got a big ride in Maine coming up in October and I don't want any problems.
Any help you guys could offer would be greatly appreciated. I've really
picked up some excellent information from this group and appreciate the help
I'm sure you'll give me with this.
Thanks,

Yes, the stem bearing was loose. That would be my guess...same symptoms... Kurt> Has anybody had a similar experience with the front end?

I recently had this same problem on my A2, and unfortunately did not find
out what it was until it was too late. I had been feeling/hearing this for
some time when I took off on a long ride with another KLR rider. I
mentioned this and this rider told me the KLRs are notorious for having the
steering column tightened (the one you see when you remove the handlebars
and take off the big nut)come loose. He had the same problem on his A9. You
have to have a special spanner wrench to tighten it. At this point in my
trip I could not get to any place to have it tightened (Sunday!) and we
proceeded to ride some really rough backcountry. To make a long story
short, my steering bearings are trashed now. Anyway, I bet if you get this
tightened, your problem will go away.

[dsn_klr650] noisy front end or noisy something
Jim
In the unlikely event this happens again you can do a quick fix by inserting
a screwdriver in the slot that the wrench would fit in and TAPPING the handle
of the screwdriver with a rock. Just don't get it too tight. When you get
back to civilization you can torque it properly.

Same symptoms, done some off-roading, tightened bearing...still clunks. Does this mean my bearings are shot? Is this easy to visually verify if you remove the handlebars/triple clamp? dat brooklyn bum _______________________________________________________ Say Bye to Slow Internet! http://www.home.com/xinbox/signup.html

Mike, to check the bearings If you have a center stand roll the bike onto it
and get the front off the ground. Push the handlebar one way then the other.
if you feel it "grab" in the middle (it may be a gentle "grab") you need
bearings, if it does not you do not. If you don't have a center stand you
should be able to pull the bike toward yourself while standing alongside and
balance it on the side stand (it sounds harder than it is) and perform the
same test.
