[dsn_klr650] dual sport ride question: nklr
Mike, there are lots of reasons people choose to trailer. In my case it is often that I have limited time for vacation and I can move faster to the rally and return with a rig. I sometimes trailer (actually double trailer, with the cycle trailer behind my fifth wheel) as it provides better accomodations for wife and children. I'd love to be able to do more riding...I just need more time... i don't think it's necessary to poke fun at anyone for trailering bikes
anywhere. the point is that they love it enough to bring it along.
trailering dual-sport bikes is often practical and time-saving. the point
is to have a bike which is legal to ride from where you are to the
trailhead, and also legal on forestry roads, etc, where you need a
registered street-legal bike.
and, yes, kurt "trailers", although that's kinda like saying moab is "warm"
and the trails there are "ok". what a contraption...
kurt, welcome back to the grind 8^(...

none taken> Meaning you no disrespect.
dual sporting is just like everything else in our complicated lives...it is specialized because it means so many different things to so many different people. Rest assured there are plenty of folks who want to have the very same experience you do but you have to do a bit of inquiry from the ride organizers. The Utah-Get-Together for example is very socially oriented and mild on the difficulty of the rides (except those led by Fred)...this would be very disappointing for many folks but the beauty is all they have to do is talk to Verle Nelson or Fred and get the right maps and go have at it. The Big Cat rally held in Wendover this year was nearly all graded roads...for the big GS type bikes...because I arrived late and missed the meet I ended up having one of the best rides ever as I was forced to cut across the sand flats and sage to connect when the road ended abruptly. I'm rambling a bit but my point is just keep at it...and find out what kind of riding is going on. I, for one, would not want to take my KLR on the same rails that people are attacking with hot 250's and 400's that is not my idea of fun...but others would... Thanks Pete, how are things going? Loving the XR? I haven't been able to sell the XR200 so I'm thinking of making it a project bike for the winter. Like I need another project. Can you believe I can't sell that bike for a $1,000...that is like a dozen pizzas in New Jersey...(g)... Kurt> kurt, welcome back to the grind 8^(... > > _pete

Just curious, why does "trailering" save time ? I'm having a very stupid day
so if I missed something obvious go ahead and laugh.

The only way trailering would save time is if at least two people are in the same vehicle and one sleeps while the other drives and
the event is over 24 hours away.
Or, you could have you "boy" tow the KLR to the event and you could arrive in your very own Lear Jet and then be helicoptered to the
ride.

The last 2 rides I've been on, I worked til 2am the night before, had to be up before 6am to make the trip. 4 hours on the road, then get there and ride. Sometimes it just makes it easier to trailer. But then when I get there, I do take most of the trails that the 250's and 400's and blazing so maybe that's why I need the extra energy. Besides, it's easier to get my wife in the truck at ungodly morning hours than to get her on the back of the bike. dat brooklyn bum _______________________________________________________ Say Bye to Slow Internet! http://www.home.com/xinbox/signup.html

when i rode from jersey to arizona, it took a week. in a car, it usually
takes three days doing it relatively comfortably. when i rode to florida on
the klr, it took three days. that's a 24 hour drive in the car. granted,
we don't push ourselves to the point of nausea, but we ride alot. you stop
alot on a bike, even if just for gas, but more because it's more physically
demanding than driving. it also takes longer to pack/unpack. it just plain
takes longer to go the same distance, in my experience.
