Yes, I just reported this same problem to the list a few days ago. My AV34 rear with 9000 miles on it had nineteen cracks on the sidewall. They started in the knobs and went around to the sidewall. The cracks were only on one side of the tire, the side that the drive chain is on. Was your gripster the 24 or AV34? Given the mileage I got out of the tire I will put another on and watch it closely for defects. I scrapped the old tire, no longer have it. This problem with Avon Tires came up several months ago on another list (Transalp I think) anyway it seems to be an ongoing problem and no one seems to know why it happens. Someone did suggest that hard acceleration might be the cause but I find it hard to believe that KLRs and Transalps would be powerful enough to do that. Ed Windsor Oh

a radial tire with a tube in it builds up a lot of heat, especially if it underinflated. I was taught along time ago to check your air pressure cold, ride for 30 minutes and check it again. A properly inflated tire should have a 4- 6 pound pressure rise as the tire heats up. If it rises more than that, the tire is underinflated and the internal friction is causing too much pressure rise. An overinflated tire will not heat up enough and will give a smaller increase in pressure. This could be 100% pure B.S., but it has worked for me for a long time. I run my av's at around 40 psi, sometimes less, around 36 psi. I haven't had any problems(yet), wear seems to be minimal, and the dern things make my klr feel like it is on rails. I one of 'em pops, I or my survivors, will inform the list. These "cracks" went CLEAR through the tire to the tube. I can't imagine that I was too far away from a REAL REAL big problem. Just my opinion sitting here looking at this thing. BTW: Just mounted a new Bridgestone (OEM BMW rear). Went on much better/easier, has thicker tread and looks real real good. Another little ditty is that the Bridgestone has a two ply nylon side wall as opposed to the single ply (forgot the material) that the Avon has. Will get a ride in on it this weekend if all works out. Erik.
