Gary, Off hand you could go down through the Delta into Livermore, up over Mt Hamilton and come down the other side into East San Jose. Long ride, did it years ago. Whatever you do , avoid at all costs the highway that runs from I-80W near Fairfield to 680S in Benecia. Very dangerous for a bike(windy), I almost lost it being blown completely across the freeway.(60mph steady crosswinds. I'd take 5S to 215E (tracy) to 580W to 680S. Altamont pass is usually not too bad, but be careful. Or The sacramento delta roads will bring you out to Pittsburgh and you can take back roads around Mt diablo to danville than south to SJ. AAA has a good bay area delta map available. Howdy Gary! By all means leave town on Freeport Blvd. Head south on the delta (hwy. 16) and go through Pittsburg, slip over the hills there and come out on the east side of San Jose. Been in Sacramento long? I am in Antelope, bordering Sacramento proper on the north end. I have done the delta ride many times, I use it to gauge a new bikes prowness. :^) E-mail me off list and I can give you a door to door route with a minimum of freeway travel with my mapping software. --- Rev. Riding from Sacramento to San Jose means you will
encounter the mother of all headwinds between Tracy
and Livermore (if you go that way). Not at all KLR
friendly.
As an alternate to the 580 you can ride over Patterson
Pass and on through higway 84 and if you want to keep
off the freeways take Calaveras.
