[dsn_klr650] techno-klr and vibration
I've got a question, the answer to which will determine if I ride my bike to
work for the next two months or not...
I've got a big deadline for a major project and my company is about to hand
over a laptop computer that costs just less than twice what I paid for my
KLR. My question is: Is there any danger of damaging a laptop computer with
it inside a standard padded case and strapped to the back of a thumper? (I'm
assuming that I stay rubber-down...)
Thanks in advance,
Jim Jackson II

Jim-
I wouldn't recommend strapping to the back of your bike... I would rather
put it in a backpack and wear the backpack, then your whole body acts as a
vibration isolation mount. Eventually the vibration will weaken the traces
on the motherboard, but I would be most worried about the screen (and these
days they're $1k+ to replace), just bottom your bike out once (a pothole or
something) and you've got a broken screen. Too bad the plastic thin film
displays haven't reached production yet, it sound like those you could jump
on and they'd keep smiling. Though I regularly carry my laptop strapped to
the back of my bike, I wouldn't do it if it wasn't mine... Then again do
they know that you ride a motorcycle? You could always claim, "Hey, it just
stopped working!" (no mention of the 45 mile singletrack you just did with
it strapped to your luggage rack, hehehehehe)
So does this mean that they've got you working after you leave work!? Damn
those tricky sonofabiatches in corporate america.

my laptop came with a padded leather case which also straps the laptop in on
the inner wall of the case (with the case held upright). i put the case in
(horizontally) my Action Packers on both street bikes and have put about
4000 miles on them in this fashion without any damage. the laptop is kinda
suspended within the case using this technique, not touching anything, and i
believe this aids shock absorption. this technique has not been tested in
earnest offroad (although those roads in nova scotia aren't too smooth...)

I guess the strobe light on top of my helmet dose freak them out, I'll try that next time. MotorMark> It's also helpful with skittish horses to stop and remove your > helmet so the horse can recognize you as a human. > > Gino
