Hello all,
I just joined the group a couple of days ago...WOW! what an
active email reflector.
I haven't had a bike in several years, I do own a 86 Honda 200X 3
wheeler and a Honda 4trax200. I now have the fever for a real bike
and have decided on the Kawasaki KLR650.
Questions:
1. What is the average price paid for one of the 2001 models (Can't
find a 2000 model anywhere)
2. Does anyone know of a place to find out the dealer cost, so I can
go to the dealer armed to get a fair deal?
3. How much does insurance typically run on a bike this size?
Thanks in advance

buying a new klr650
I'm from Northern California San Francisco Bay Area. I paid a little under
$5700 out the door price for my 2001 KLR650. This was the lowest price for
about 200 miles (no B.S. - 200 miles). The highest price I was quoted was
$63++.00. Don't compare California prices with other states. We have the
smog "L" version. Also consider that in California a 2 bedroom-one bath
one-car garage house costs $300K. Other places in the U.S. you can buy a 5
bedroom-4 bath-3 car garage house for under $200K. Motorcycle dealers in
California have to live somewhere and eat too. And your paying for it with
full list price. MSRP list price for a 2001 KLR650 is $4999.00. add sales
tax 8.25%, about $125.00 DMV fees, +shipping and prep. just for the record
the KLR are preassembled somewhere near Los Angeles as they come off the
boat from Japan. Then they are shipped to the dealers and they put oil,
brake fluid, coolant, battery, and make final adjustments. For referance
expect to pay around $5900.00 in California for the KLR. If you get it less
you got a deal. If you payed more you got screwed. There is still a waiting
list for KLR up here. even for the insane price of $6300.00 out the door.

[dsn_klr650] shimming the needle jet on a klr 250
I shimmed my '89 and it worked well. It's been a few years, so I don't
remember how much. It wasn't a very scientific venture...I just found a
washer that looked like it would be about the same thickness as a notch on
an adjustable needle and went with it. It helped the bikes cold start/run
character and took out some of the lean surge.
