Sounds like you have the wrong front sprocket. The only thing that is locating the sprocket is the engine on the right and the cover on the left, not a good situation at all. You really need that funny washer with the cuts for the splines and the two holes bolted to the sprocket to properly locate the sprocket on the splined output shaft. Myself, I wouldn't ride the bike with that front sprocket in place. Alan Henderson A13 Iowa>sprockets being year specific made me think of something.
