It probably had something to do with that tire not being made worth a damn. Tread seperations are suslay due to manufacturing errors, from what I have seen. -Tom '96 KLR 650

IRCs are relatively cheap tires. you get what you pay for. gears, ye wilde ryder -- wallace@... 99 zx-9r "blue bayou" 98 vtr-1000f "stormy" zwallace@... 86 cr-250 "dirt devil" 00 sv-650 "zipper" "& you were using your friends as a berm." -- RP 83 v65 magna "nasty" FoJ#002...AMA#456832...JHLO#002...COP#000...CCS#SW969...Support the RKBA

Actually that could be what happened in my case. I had checked the pressure before I left on the trip, but this happened the next afternoon after some hard riding; perhaps the pressure was low. -----Original Message----- From: The Squasher [mailto:thesquasher@...] Sent: Monday, August 07, 2000 14:44 PM To: DSN_klr650@egroups.com Subject: [DSN_klr650] RE: YIKES There are 2 possible answers. 1)someone allready mentioned - poor quality control or manufacturing. 2) Low tire (air) pressure. A tire with low pressure will over heat and seperate the tread from the cord rapings. I have seen this on cars alot. It doesn't have to be a recap like the truck tire treads that you see laying in the road. A kinda funny story - A friend of mine who worked in a gas/service station that installed new tires would always talk about how dumb some people are for driving on a tire that was low on air. At least once a week he would have a tire in his shop that had seperated do to low pressure causing it to over heat. A steel belted tire look real nasty and you should see what the fender of the cars look like. Anyway, one day he was going on a weekend fishing/camping trip with his girlfriend and stopped at my work to pick up something. I noticed his front tire (big 4x4 35" x 12") was low and told him he should fill it up so it doesn't seperate like all those other tire stories he told me about. He said it would be OK. On Monday I saw his truck with new tires on front and one of the fenders looked like it was beat with a ballpeen hammer from the inside out. I asked him what happened did his tire sepperate. All he said was shut-up. His girlfriend told me he didn't fill the tire with air and it sepperated on him. Now when he talks about dumb people he can add himself to the list. Date: Mon, 7 Aug 2000 09:07:33 -0600 From: Jim Cunningham Subject: YIKES When I finally came to a stop and got off the bike I could hardly believe my eyes and a cold chill ran through me! About a foot to foot and a half of the tread on the rear tire was gone! Yes I mean gone; all that was left was the smooth black rubber with cord showing through in places. The tread had peeled off like a skin. I knew then that the sound I heard was the tread coming off and hitting the frame. The tire was a 2 year old IRC GP-1 that had lots of tread on it. Does anyone know how/why this happened. what? IRC isn't a brand-name? they're only one of the largest tire mfrs on the planet. they make extremely high-quality bicycle tires. my gp110 went on easily, and was perfectly round and balanced out of the box. heck, they're not even cheap. they seem to be about the same price as bridgestone and pirelli. mw

And If Honda and others didn't think they are good enough to put on new bikes they must not be too bad.  I have had Metzelers and other top name tires come apart too.  So just about any tire can have problems, not just the cheaper tires.  I believe problems with tires stems from how hot you get your tires.  Either underinflation, over loading or very high speeds can cause the tread to separate.  I am not saying that a cheaper tire is as good as a more expensive tire but you can have problems with just about any tire.   Fred  (check out my Sturgis Cam on my web site.  See if you can spot Gino.)

only in the same way cheap shite^W^Wcheng shin tires are name-brand.

bigger != better. GM is one of the largest cage manufacturers on the planet, too, but i certainly wouldn't own one of their pieces o' shite.

bicycle tires != motorcycle tires. 'nuf said.

The timing of this statement is ironic considering Firestone and Bridgestone just recalled 20 million tires today. You might want to check the tires on your cage.
