With all the air running though the system now, do you have any engine temp. issues? Are you running hotter or cooler? How about midrange surging (common with airbox modifications), is that eradicated with the extra fuel flow? Thanks for spending the time and $ to educate the KLR world :^) --- Rev. [dsn_klr650] post-mod dyno runs

Hi Rev. The engine seems to run at almost exactly the same temp. as before the mods. The ambient here in Okieland has been in the high 90's and low 100's a few times since the mods and there hasn't been any overheating yet. As far as engine performance, I really can't imagine it running any smoother. The bike runs great throughout the rpm range and I can't detect any surging at all. One of my buddies wanted me to ride his Ducati the other day so we swapped bikes for about 30 miles. He was shocked at the KLR's performance and declared it "perfectly tuned". It was a nice compliment, but somewhat of an exaggeration I'm sure. Now, I just need to find a Suzuki Samurai with a surplus head rest so the Mrs. will be more comfy. That was a good idea and it looks good too. Is the back rest as sturdy as it looks? I also like the looks of your low front fender. How do you like it? Any drawbacks? Thanks for the pics and the web site. You and all the other listers are certainly welcome for the info. I've learned a lot from this list and I hope you all find this stuff useful. As mentioned in my earlier post, I'm experimenting with a couple of other things that seem to help, but I'm not ready to discuss them yet. Jim

The back rest is very sturdy, except in the upward vertical motion (pulling it out). But, friction and gravity keep it where it belongs very well. Vibration, and the often "passenger shifting" have never moved it. I use it often to mount a back pack to the bike when solo riding, maikes a handy tail mount point. I would not ride the KLR on a windy day without the low fender, many don't agree, but I can't feel their agreement on the road. That stock fender is useless on the road as far as my opinion goes, except to be used as a jib sail. I had better knock it off, I can feel the flames already... :^) No draw backs yet, but I have not loaded the front tire with clay yet, that would be a major drawback! --- Rev. I can't remember seeing a graph for a 650 with bolt-ons crack 40hp yet. [...]

Hi Mister T, The second guy I spoke with at Dyno-Jet (the helpful one) mentioned that the IDS-2 Quiet system was not know for producing max. peak horsepower. He said that pipe is usually best on the lower and middle parts of the rpm range. It looks like he is right about that, at least on my bike. I wish I had known that before buying the pipe, but I'm satisified with it for now. Perhaps pipes that make more peak HP don't produce a nice even power curve. Does anyone have any good data on various pipes? I usually ride between 3000 to 5500 rpm on the road and that is in the "fat" part of the improvement curves. Both HP and torque are about 12% better at 4000. There is so much improvement throughout the range I normally use, I don't know if I want to alter anything for now. I seldom ride above 6000 rpm for any extended time. Excursions to the redline are rare for me except for the occasional blast through the gears. Has anyone else posted dyno curves for a KLR? I would love to take a look at them and compare results. I'll keep you posted on further mods. Thanks for your comments. Jim

bashing the moose

Post by Mike Awesome » Sun Aug 06, 2000 8:29 am

I was doing some research and found an earlier post in which Mr. Hink was in contact with Moose on how to improve their bash plate specifically for the KLR. Has anything come from this? Took the KLR offroading yesterday for a couple hours and had a blast. Got home cleaned the bike, cleaned and lubed the chain, checked to make sure everything was tight and all fluids were ok. Had so much fun gonna go Sunday a.m. as well, even got the girls ok..wohoo. What's this....low on oil ? That's odd my A1 has never burned oil before. But not a problem I'll do a quick (still ongoing) oil change. Get the trusty 17mm socket to loosen (yea right ) the drain plug errrr, gerrr whatthe... Cannot even get it to budge eh girly-man? Take the bash plate off to inspect further, all looks ok.? Manage to get the drain plug to move and now it just spins . So I surmise a log hit the bash plate which offered no protection for the drain plug. Has anybody rigged something to protect the drain plug ? Mike very plugged Awesome A1klr650
