maybe that's what they used at the kawa dealer... they spilled some on the rear tire and it looks like molasses!!!!! where do you get this 90w stuff?? i keep hearing that heavy grease on the chain attracts grit and may decrease the service life.... conversely i heard that lighter oils like wd-40 do not last long enough to prevent accelerated wear.... what gives????? thanx oj '01klr

Well..... an O-ring chain is internally lubricated. So you aren't actually lubricating an o-ring chain, you want to keep the grime off of it because grime acts like sandpaper and it will eventually cause the demise of your chain. It has, however, been said that it is a good idea to lubricate the chain for chain sprocket interaction. I use WD40 ONLY. I don't clean it with kero, I just put a drip pan under my chain, toss it in first, commence the balancing act and spray the chain until the grime is gone. You can wash off the dust with water, with Kero or anything you like. I use a rag sprayed with WD40 and it comes off quickly for me. I own a can of chain wax but I'm using WD-40 ONLY for experimental purposes. I have a new DID X-ring, New Sunstart Sprokets and one tooth down in the front. Proper chain tension is key and I pay attention to that. Do what makes you sleep better at night, 9 times out of 10 you'll be right. We all have "our" way of doing things. None of them are absolutely right, none of them are absolutely wrong. Just find your way and Stick with it. This is a really dead horse by the way... please check the archives for a complete story of who's right and who's wrong. :) laterZ Dash

I use the master link style chain (DID V ring). I also haven't had a chain lose a master link in 10 years. The advantage to a master link style chain is I can remove the chain without too much difficulty. I carry a extra master link just in case. Kawasaki recommends only endless chains. Liability issue. Hey, THAT I like. I'll have to see if I can find the right spline broach. But man, if my Moose shifter is going to do that too, I think I'll just beef up the welds on the stock unit. I'll keep an eye on it. C -- Dr. J.
