Hey Gino, You wouldn't kick a guy while he is down........or would ya ? Seriously, I posted this 'news' so that all you KLR types who lust after a BMWGS would be forewarned about a major fault of the paralever design. Many experienced hands think the u-joints are good for about 45K miles. Mine went out right on schedule. My o-doe reads 45, 691 with the last 100 miles of a "whole lotta shakin' going on". I think the long uphill climbs with stutter bumps under hard acceleration killed it. I was trying to keep up with an XR and XR-L that floated over the terrain while I had to plow through. I still like my GS and will fix it and ride it many, many more miles. But, I also would like to compliment it with another DS bike suitable for 2-up riding, multi-day trips and extended range travel ...... Can a big single DS do the job as well as the airhead GS? Anyway, if my shaft had not let go, it would have been a super-dooper 8 day motorcycle adventure. Instead it was 5 great days on the bike, 2 days lounging around (welcome rest, broken shaft or not), and then a 13 hour trudge home. Glad I did it. Knot - who has KLR (DR?) envy. ps: If your KLR doesn't have at least 45K miles on it with much of it riding 2-up in the dirt, keep your 'superiority' comments to ya sef. The BMW's aint perfect, but they do eat the miles and the $$$$

Thanks for all the input on the chain life. It was a good life, and the chain isn't "shot" but it is old so I went down and spent the money I had previously earmarked for a new torture rack and some nipple clamps, opting to order a new RK "XO" ring chain, new JT sprockets front and rear (standard gearing), and a new Maxxis C6006 for the front wheel. The stock rear sprocket still looks fine but what the hell, a new chain deserves new sprockets. The mechanic at the BMW shop who is held in reasonbly high esteem by me, and who is an amateur club racer on his GSX-R750, tells me I could get 30k out of a new chain by dribbling 30wt oil on the 0-rings every 600 miles of so. I might try it, why not? He says not to use the WD40. Everyone certainly has opinion on this subject, that is for sure. Barbecue Bill heading for the Nez Perce Ride and Stanley Stomp, next week.

I got my klr 10 days ago with 0.8 miles on it. Today it has 1400. I plan to do at least 50k this year:) happy trails, OJ
