was rpm-o-meter now we visit cdi
Hey there... It's me again.
With the help from a lister who KNEW. I think I found my problem with the
dancing tach and sputtering fits after 4K RPM.
I managed to wash da'bomb today at lunch in preparation for surgery (sigh)
I got some snap shots of it before I washed it though
Then wheeled it into the O.R. and began. I went to the manual, G' that's a
useful tool. I first measured the resistance of the stator coils. In the
range at 0.7 ohms. I didn't do the reg/rectifier test yet, but that will
occur tonight, seems like a little bit-o-work and I have to find a 6V
source. Anyway then it was on to the ignition coil. That was out of
spec.... 0.45 ohms on the primary and 10 kohms on the secondary. Replace
Ignition coil #1. Then on to the CDI. That sucker was so far out, I'm not
surprised I had troubles. I am assuming that the manual is correct,
however the polarities are switched. So Replace CDI #2. Then on to the
exciter coil... well this is the new Electrex unit, so I have to call Ritzo
to confirm but I got 224 ohms which is 24 ohms over spec. The Pick-up coil
was within range at 132.4 ohms. Still have it apart to work on the Starter
while I'm in there but... I think I may have found the problems. I'll let
you know when I know for sure.
If someone has a spare CDI (pre A4) and an ignition coil that they'd like
to part with, please let me know. Or if someone has a Pre A4 CDI that they
can do some measurements on to make sure that the manual is correct then
please do let me know what you find. OR if someone has already verified
their CDI in the past and the manual was on then I'd like to know about
that too. The Kawi dealer (parts Desk) told me that it sounded like the
CDI, he had one go on his Quad and the same symptoms were
experienced. Seems to be the logical next step.. I'm concerned about the
ignition coil as well.
Thanks a ton for those that helped.
