[dsn_klr650] intermittent starter

Post by Dash Weeks » Tue Jul 25, 2000 9:46 am

Hey Doc, Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, that's not it. Granted I do have a battery problem and I'll have to check for a charging problem but..... Each night I pull it in and stick the bike on a trickle charger, in the morning I've got lots-o-juice. I tested your theory once by leaving the charger cables on and switching the charger to the 50AMP start/jump position. Still no start. Oh yeah, the only safety switch I have left is the Clutch switch, and that's not it. Unless the relay will click even with the safety switch open. Anyone? I can hear the solenoid clicking -Every time- I push the starter button. I've put a DMM on the leads to the starter, again lots-o-juice at the starter. So I've got juice and I've got relay, -Every time- I hit that button. The only thing it could be is internal to the starter. I'll pull it this weekend and give it a thorough examination before I actually start diggin in. I can't think of anything else. When my battery is too low then I just get a burping relay or nothing. This morning my I had the winning number and it fired right up... ???? Oh well, time to bond with my starter. And here I was making jokes about Lucas.... Sigh... What comes around goes around. [dsn_klr650] intermittent starter

Dash I had a problem very much like this on my 1985 454LTD. I was able to nurse it along for about 6 months by cleaning the connections at the starter once a week, but I ended up buying a new starter. Ed Windsor Oh

I think that after my riding experience with the Dunlop K750 this weekend, I would take the Gripsters over them, they didn't seem to perform as well in a mixed wet grass/mud as the Gripsters, but I could be fooling myself. I think that I need to get a pair of very aggressive DS tires like the D606/K139, so that I can frame the arena of tire performance on the KLR... At least that way I will know the difference between a good street tire and a good dirt tire. Without that frame of reference, I don't think that my judgements of DS tires will have any validity. Besides it will make finding a good 50/50 or 80/20 or whatever a lot easier once I have ridden the extremes. Besides that Dunlop 606 looks simply BAD ASS! Zack P.S. Until I got pictures of my bike, you "naked" KLR adorned the background on my screen for several months. Damn fine looking bike. Congrats. Gino writes: I have/had the Dunlop 606/K139 combo on my KLR. Fantastic off-road performance, marginal on-road, hazardous on wet pavement. I'm seeing King tires more and more at shops. The dual sport tire does look impressive, but with the OEM Dunlops available from Dual Star for a song, I'd probably buy a couple sets of those first. Gino
