YUP, Red Dot, Yellow Circle, Blue Triangles, Purple Hearts... .... Lucky Charms eh? That is indicating the lightest part of the tire. Put that next to the valve stem and you'll have less weight to add to actually get it to balance. MT-21's are not directional. Mark,
Yep, that should be the lightest part of the tire so put it at the valve.
Learned that from Gino's excellent article at:

Hi Mark, yes the red dod goes as near to the valve as possible.. Not sure about direction of rotation for MT21s though, sorry ! -- Andy - Southampton>I'm mounting up a new front tire, and I noticed a red dot on the >tire. [dsn_klr650] tire question
Hi Ed,
I've been known to be wrong before, and I don't plan on always being
extreme right in the future. However, being to the far left is way out of
the question for me. 8o
The shop may have installed them correctly, or they may have mixed it up
and installed them incorrectly. I really don't know. What I do know is
what I have read from many sources, I haven't actually tried to find the
lightest part of the tire to determine where the dot should go. I know I
shouldn't believe everything I read.
OTOH, we are talking about the balance of a M/C tire, not the tolerance of
a Space Shuttle part. Not that they are that great! Anyway, I digress, if
your wheel is out of balance then you add weights to the opposite side of
the heaviest part of the wheel assembly. That's how you do it no matter
where the dot or circle is, you just may need to add less if it is mounted
in the correct position.
It would make sense that the circle would be the lightest, as the circle
would be the closest and thus easier to line up with the stem. When it is
at the heaviest then you have to go at 180 degrees from the stem and if you
are like me, you are probably off more than a couple of degrees... Not
devastating either way.
Last time I mounted a tire, I didn't even pay attention to the circle and
had it nearly 75 degrees from the stem. I didn't care, that bead was a
pain to set and I just left it. Although I did have to un-mount it for
removal of my spokes. I'm getting to that post I promise.
Fred mounts a lot of tires, and from what I read he is the MASTER. He
should chime in here any moment... Fred? ..... Oh Fred...... We need you.....

Thanks for the replies on the red dot question. The red dot is at the valve
stem now.
I have another question for the slimers here. How do you check the air
pressure with slime blowing out of the valve stem? I'll just guesstimate for
now.
TIA,
Mark Wilson

newbie......everybody duck!!!
Hey all,
I've been lurking for a week or two. Thought I'd come out of hiding.
I tried replying to the group from my regular e-mail but apparently
they didn't get through. I've been using Usenet for years, Does this
sort of webbased NG only allow posting from the website?
Anyway, on to bikes. I was out running around town monday on my A14,
pulled into a CompUSA and parked one space away from another A14
(newer and shinier(sp?)than mine....nice)Had a gun holder mounted
onthe handle bars. I looked around but did'nt see anyone that I
thought looked like the owner. Was wondering if it was anyone in
here.
I was in Mont Lake Terrace, WA. Which is just north of Seattle. But
if
it's you, you already knew that.
