[dsn_klr650] 'klunk' on shift to first

Post by Rob MacLeod » Fri Jun 02, 2000 2:25 pm

Is the clunk happening with every shift to first or just on the first one after a cold start? If it only happens on a cold start just do what I do and shift from neutral to second then down into first. Rob

I just bought a used '99 KLR650 and have only put 400 miles on it--it now has just over 1020 miles so is just out of break-in. I have owned several bikes but not recently and I'm not a bike mechanic. This one 'klunks' fairly loudly when stopped, going from neutral to first. The idle's set at about 1100 rpm. It reminds me of my old 1950 BMW R50/2 which didn't have any syncromesh--didn't hurt it but it really sounded bad. Is this noise normal for the KLR650, or am I chewing up gear teeth? PS: I'm in Annandale, Virginia, near Washington, DC, and am interested in meeting other dual-sport riders in the area. [dsn_klr650] 'klunk' on shift to first

I also have a 99 and it does it only once each day. I start it up in the morning and let it warm up. Then I put it into first and it 'klunks' and jerks forward a little bit. I raised this issue last year after I got the bike. I was told not to worry about it as its normal. Again, it only happens the first time I switch from neutral to first after starting up cold, then all subsequent shifting is very smooth. I think the same thing happened with other bikes I had in the past. -Brian Shepard Philadelphia PA A13 -----Original Message----- From: Phil Childress [mailto:jpchldrs@...] Sent: Friday, June 02, 2000 3:01 PM To: DSN_klr650@egroups.com Subject: [DSN_klr650] 'Klunk' on shift to first I just bought a used '99 KLR650 and have only put 400 miles on it--it now has just over 1020 miles so is just out of break-in. Mine is a '97 and does exactly the same thing when you first start it up for the day. I'll try that shift from neutral to second and then to first and see if it changes anything in the "Klunk". David W. Moulder "Bumblebee" RAMS Treasurer TNBMWRIDER@... 901-660-1039 1994 R100GS 1997 KLR 650

Jim, The KLR has the nearly same load carrying capacity as the R100GS . Sure the GS has a higher gross vehicle weight rating, but it is almost 120lbs heavier and even more for the PD version, you may not need to shed as much as you think. -svt-

and
>used to carrying all I want on my GS beemer. Your red net-looking thangs >gives me some ideas to cut down on weight.
