I might as well chime in here too. I just went through this very scenario a few months ago. After riding my whole life, I didn't ride for 7 years while life happened in a big way. I don't regret not riding the bike, it was the right decision at the time, but it sucked not being able to ride. I didn't even realize how much I missed it until I got my bike. I should have gotten one a while ago. I've been having the time of my life since I got it.
My first choice was a KLR, but I couldn't find one in my price range either. 2nd choice was a KLX 650, which I ended up with. I looked for about 3 months, realized I'd rather have a KLX then no bike at all, so when one of those came up at a good price, I jumped on it. It's been great. So if you're looking at XR's and DR's, definetly check out the KLX's. Either the street legal or dirt models are great. The KLX is water cooled, nice frame and suspension bits, small gas tank, and skinny seat. Not a lot of aftermarket stuff. Not that many of them around.
I figured if I really didn't like the KLX I could always sell it. But I love it. And sure enough right after I bought the KLX a KLR came up for sale in my area in my price range. Go figure. And I'd still like to get a KLR as the KLX isn't comfortable on the super slab. I know of at least one lister that has a KLX and KLR, plus some other bikes.
Good luck, you're going to love. The KLX is the ultimate anti-burnout thing. Beats beers, drugs, yoga, meditation, etc, etc.
