I have almost put on 500 miles on my 2000 KLR650 and I have already lost the bolt that holds the tool kit in place, 2 of the black screws one from each radiator shield, and then tonight the bolt right above the muffle that holds the right side panel on. Am I just having really bad luck or is this common. And is there a place to buy these screws and bolts cheaper than my dealer.
Thanks,

It is a very common problem on the big ol' thumper. You can find most of the
replacement screws and bolts at your local hardware store. Use the blue
locktight on almost everything. And every now and then, check all the bolts
and screws just to make sure their still tight.

Charles,
Don't feel too bad. While riding my 'new' used KLR home
from the seller's house, I lost the rear brake pedal
shaft (about $30 to replace) because the previous owner
didn't check the tightness of the pinch bolt on the brake
pedal. Mark got it right in his reply about checking All
nuts & bolts regularly & using BLUE Loctite to help
prevent them from loosening. The RED stuff is to be
avoided - it's the permanent type & not to be used for
fasteners that will be removed from time to time. I
check my fasteners every couple of weeks and whenever
I wash my bike. Before I go off-road riding, I ALWAYS
check out everything. I don't want any problems especially
when I'm off road. It's not a bad idea to occasionally do
a quick 'walk-around' looking for loose or missing screws
(kinda like pilots do).

ps: Don't think of all this checking as a chore, it's a
bonding moment. Treat her right & she'll treat you
right. Neglect her & ...
