[dsn_klr650] new bad sound

Post by Mark » Tue May 16, 2000 1:18 pm

I had a similar sound in my A2; I thought it was piston slap. When I pulled the right engine cover off to do clutch maintenance and to check the oil strainer, I noticed that the 2 gears on the crankshaft that drive the clutch basket and oil pump had the tiniest bit of an the nut was loose. There's a locking tab on the washer, so I wasn't worried about it falling off. Anyway, I retorqued it to its 87 FtLb spec. After I got the bike back together, the noise was gone! I think that the engine case has an amplifying "guitar effect" that makes small noises sound like big problems. Another example: just before the cam chain tensioner goes to its next position, my bikes sound like the valves are really loose. The extra play in the chain makes noise as it slaps against the guides, I guess. Mark B2 (26K miles) A2 (42K miles) ----> balancer chain tensioner just his its limit.
