It could be the coasting enricher not doing its job, but then I'd expect the noise to occur at each shift. Mister_T

Gentlemen, Forgive me if this is redundant, I'm not sure that I've seen the totality of this thread..... Have the nuts at the exhaust flange(where the pipe exits the barrel) been checked? These nuts being loose is the most typical source of backfire woes I know of on the KLR. If you see black exhaust deposit anywhere around that flange...smile....cause you found it. Even if not check tightness. Also there is a copper donut(o-ring) which fits between the start of the exhaust pipe and an inner area of the barrel (where the pipe fits in...when cinched by the flange). If this donut is shot you'll get the same result. Either condition indicates a slight sucking of outer air on the intake stroke and .....'BBBBBBackfire!'. I checked these and one was indeed a li'l loose. After tightening, the backfire is less obvious but still there.

Is this donut in the opening I just tightened? I also noticed that one of the drain plugs on the muffler is missing it's head. Maybe I overtightened and vibration made it drop? Could this be a part of the problem?
