More of vroooompffft than a loud backfire. I can get rid of it by adjusting the idle mixture so it idles at about 15-1600rpm but I know it's supposed to idle between 11-1300. Is this a problem I should worry about or just set the mix and forget about it? It's completely stock carb, airbox, and exhaust (with a swiss cheese butt plate). Had the problem before drilling the holes though. dat brooklyn bum _______________________________________________________ Get 100% FREE Internet Access powered by Excite Visit http://freelane.excite.com/freeisp Visit the KLR650 archives at http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650 Support Dual Sport News... dsneditor@... I'd question as to whether you were running too lean. Todd A9

Gentlemen,
Forgive me if this is redundant, I'm not sure that I've seen
the totality of this thread.....
Have the nuts at the exhaust flange(where the pipe exits the
barrel) been checked? These nuts being loose is the most typical
source of backfire woes I know of on the KLR. If you see black
exhaust deposit anywhere around that flange...smile....cause
you found it. Even if not check tightness.
Also there is a copper donut(o-ring) which fits between
the start of the exhaust pipe and an inner area of the barrel
(where the pipe fits in...when cinched by the flange). If this
donut is shot you'll get the same result.
Either condition indicates a slight sucking of outer
air on the intake stroke and .....'BBBBBBackfire!'. G'luck
Slide
PS Aren't all DS's supposed to idle at 1.5K rpm?

Is this donut in the opening I just tightened? I also noticed that one of the drain plugs on the muffler is missing it's head. Maybe I overtightened and vibration made it drop? Could this be a part of the problem? Sage advice and I follow it religiously. If I start with vodka, wine, beer and cognac, I stay with vodka, wine, beer and cognac all evening.
