ignition coil and waterproofing?

Post by emc4jhp@yahoo.com » Wed May 10, 2000 9:53 am

I pulled the tank yesterday to remove my busted radiator. While it was off I took a look at the ignition system. Seems something shorts out when I ride through moderatly deep water and I have to wait for it to dry before the bike will start again. The ignition wire is attached to this little cylinder that is about 1" in dia. and 2.5" long. I've never seen an ignition coil this small before. As such, is the stock ignition adequate, or will an upgrade boast performance- anybody tried? Anybody had luck waterproofing the ignition system? James Poore

parking light disable

Rev. Chuck, Running down a battery is not a good idea at any time. By the time your parking lite has depleted the battery to about 11.5 volts, you'll be bump starting your KLR. The simplest electrical solution is to cut the red/white wire NEAR the plastic electrical connector at the bottom of the ignition switch*. Don't cut the R/W wire too close to this connector, or you won't be able to easily reconnect the wire in the future. Tape the exposed part of the R/W wire closest to the ignition switch. The R/W wire coming from the wire harness needs to be attached to the solid RED wire. The RED wire is only energized when the switch is in the 'on' position. Use heat-shrink tubing & electrical tape, & make sure the the spliced wires won't cause an electrical short when you turn the handlebars. I wouldn't use an on/off switch for safety reasons, if you forgot to turn it on .... * You may find a more convenient place to cut & splice once you remove the plastic shroud that covers the electrical connectors. I am sooo glad the bike has a decompression device, bump starting would be a pain otherwise! Any ideas on how to disable the parking lights, without killing anything else? --- Rev.
