The legality is an obvious concern but the mp3 format might make some thing s possible that were not. It is my understanding that there can be as many as 150 songs burned onto a CDROM in mp3 and that there are audio components becoming available to play them. I am intrigued about doing this at home but would probably just wire my PC into my home stereo. What REALLY has me going is the emergence of player decks for the cage that can take either audio CDs or ROMs with mp3. I also found a in dash unit ( http://www2.empeg.com/main.html )that could be loaded up with as much as 36gb that slides out of your dash to be usb uploaded from your PC. The fact that my CD head unit is dead in the car is just working out to be sooooooooo convenient! Oh yeah, moto content: I would expect the mp3 walkman like units will soon have a much larger capacity or will be replaced by CDROM readers that would find their way into a tank bag. MP3 format is not the direction to go for home audio quality. Optimal quality -- have musicians play in acoustically correct room in your home -- last practiced by kings in France Next best thing -- have really good recording of band play from fabulous stereo equipment set up so your recliner is the optimal listening position -- last practiced by many. And the arguments linger on about which is the best recording method. Vinyl -- generally agreed upon standard of actual recorded music quality -- although dust on the album or the needle or a not sharp needle or whatever can lead to ickiness. High maintenance system. 8-track -- Very good. -- Lower maintenance than vinyl. Still not quite as portable as one might like. Cassettes -- OK. -- Particularly with Dolby Noise Reduction. Much more portable. Low maintenance system. Noticeable quality compromise. CD's -- OK. -- Much more portable/compact than cassettes. Slightly higher maintenance as, once again, you have to worry about scratching the media. MP3's -- OK -. -- Way more compact than CD's. If you've got a Rio or something similar. Way less compact than CD's if you've got it only on your computer. Very low maintenance. Just gotta not click on love letters, and your media is fine. Occasional bad port from one media storage location to another -- more unlistenable than a cassette left out in the sun. Way noticeable quality compromise. A bad rip (digital to digital with minimal oversampling) sounds worse than most things I've subjected my ears to. A good rip is up to FM radio quality. Which, imho, ain't the peak of the listening experience. Don't get me wrong. I own a Diamond Rio 500. I use my laptop and MusicMatch software to rip CD's I own to put on the Rio. The Rio is the perfect road tunes machine for commuting (doesn't skip like my portable cd player did!). I need to get some smart media before I do a _rilly_ long trip otherwise I'll hate whatever I'm listening to by the end of it. Frankly, I don't really need better than FM radio quality when I'm on the road. And, yes, you will be able to get many more mp3's on a cd than the original artist put on. Mark- Why wait for a company to make one... I made one myself and it is about 9"x11"x2", has a 37GB hard drive in it (for about 600 hours of music, my current collection is about 14 GB), and runs off 12vDC. Made it for about $500, and the best part is, it is a full operational linux box! So whose up for RC5 cracking on their way out to Moab (just have to hook up my Sprint PCS phone to it)... Haven't tried shock testing it yet, so I may put in a old 4 GB drive and see how much I can get the heads to slam into the platter. Perhaps I could tie the speedo and a GPS into it for a trip computer to end all trip computers... I would think that you could fit a whole lotta topo maps onto a 37GB drive and plenty of music too (even at 192kbits/sec)... Anyone had experience mounting a 9" TFT LCD screen to their handlebars?
