I guess taking out the spring stops the tensioner extending any further.

But not necessarily if the spring is removed.

Which is what I would do on my bike if I had that kind of tensioner
fitted. For some reason my 600 has the earlier screw type tensioner.
Removing the tensioner still requires the spring to be removed before
the unit is refitted.
