go to www.dualsport.org and look for the fusebox mod. I did the fan too while I was at it. The fan fuse is located under the right cowling.

The hot side is switched if I remember correctly. Put power to the switch instead and see what happens. And no... don't use an old lamp cord with frayed ends for power... #8^O Arne

[dsn_klr650] help with fan electrics

Eric, I don't want to contradict Arne, but I will. The KLR600 base manual shows that 12 volts is always going to the fan relay. The white wire (to the fan relay) is directly connected to the battery. [huh?] The fan can come on at any time, even with the ignition switch off. [you've been warned!] The hot (blue) wire goes to the fan. The black/yellow wire goes to ground to complete the fan circuit. A red/white wire connects the fan relay to the fan switch. When the fan switch is 'closed' this causes the fan relay to complete the 12 volt circuit to the cooling fan, turning on the fan. Possible problems: Bad fuse: don't just eyeball the fuse, check it with a continuity tester (take it from one who lost a days work 'cause the fuse "looked ok"). The fan is frozen or defective. Carefully rotate the fan with a poker, not your fingers, to see if the fan is frozen. If the fan turns freely, connect a jumper wire from the red/white wire (from the fan relay to a good metal grounding point. If the fan turns on, the fan switch is defective. Connect 12 volts directly to the fan: (+) to blue wire (-) to black yellow wire If the fan spins, the fan relay or fan switch is defective. This information is on page 14-22 of the KLR600 base manual. BTW, Arne got the fuse location right. You might want to check out the "fan bypass switch" article somewhere in the bowels of the dualsport.org page or the KLR650 page. Professor '95 KLR650 A9 Federal Way, Wa.
