Also, before removing the clutch cover, I saw a couple drops of coolant under the water pump, right at the seam between the engine case and the clutch cover. It was NOT at the seam between the water pump cover and the clutch cover. Should I just assume it's a clutch cover gasket failure, or do I need to check the "mechanical seal"? If so, what the heck is it, and how do I check it? [dsn_klr650] clutch cover gasket
Mike, on my A9 the water pump impeller would have to have come off before removing the clutch cover. The mechanical seal is a ceramic doughnut that fits into the back of the impeller and presses against a rubber ring held by spring tension over the shaft oil seal. Coolant between the engine and clutch cover would either have had to come through the water pump shaft oil seal, or was more likely just leakage down the outside of the case when the coolant was drained. If the casing setup on the '96 and later is different than the '95, disregard this post. Todd A9
