Hi everyone, as soon as I can sell my Honda hawk, I'm going to get a
dual-sport. Only thing is I can't decide which one to get. I live
in the mountains of NC and there's a lot of very twisty roads and
many
govt. gravel roads to explore. My hawk's great on pavement, but I
need something that will handle dirt roads and is a reliable commuter
and is fun to ride. Of the big three(honda,kaw.,suz.) what would be
my best choice? My local dealer has a '95KLX650 for sale, any
comments on it or any of the others will be appreciated. I'm looking
for reliability and 50/50 road/dirt commuter bike. Long trips and
plushness isn't that big of an issue. Thanks, Scott. BTW, if any
wants to trade their dualsport for my hawk let me know.

[dsn_klr650] biker down!
Ed,
Sorry to hear about your accident. It always shakes me up to hear about
incidents like this as I lost a friend of mine about 15 years ago in a
similar situation also involing a pick-up truck. I guess the most important
thing at this point is that you have survived and in the end thats what
counts.
I had a driver safety instructor years ago who told me," when you go to
drive, you must do so with the idea in mind that every other driver on the
road got out of bed that day with the intent to kill you." This seems
extreme at face value but if you make it part of your mindset it becomes
second nature after awhile, call it 'Defensive Driving' taken to the limit.
Hope I don't sound 'preachy', this is just a personal observation from my
own experience that has helped me cope with traffic over the years.
I certainly concur that an experience like this can scare you to the extent
of affecting you physically and mentally. Take the good advice of your
fellow listers, see a doc, take some quite time to cool down, talk it out
and soon as you can, get back on the bike.
Hope your feeling better soon,
Steve Pye
