even in sherrell s book i couldn t find a hint:
to which side has the split in the xpag pistons to come?
camshaft side or opposite?

Walter,
As a general rule splits in piston skirts should go on the non thrust (left
hand) side of an engine. In the case of the XPAG - the camshaft side.
I am not aware of any exceptions to the above "rule" and I would doubt if
there were any.
Unfortunately it's so long since I've stripped a TC engine I cant recall
this particular detail, nor what other piston markings or characteristics
may indicate its orientation (often there is an arrow, notch or something -
but maybe not always). Let us know if you learn something different.

i have to confess, i have been "blind". there is a marking at the piston s
top => "front" and that means the split is on the cam side!
maybe we have had too few sunshine this spring

The split is always on the non thrust (cam) side with a split skirt piston.
Assuming normal rotation of the crank.....
FYI for the rest, if you can find a modern design piston, I would go for it.
