Imperial Gallons Vs US(?) gallons

Conversion tables can be found at http://www.kbapps.com/conversion.htm 1 imperial gallon = 1.2 U.S. gallons =4.5 liters Could these two differing definitions have anything to do with the amount of beverage intake required to make oneself tipsy? More importantly, Can anyone explain the difference between a firkin, a gherkin, a merkin, and a jerkin? Note: The difference between a firkin and a jerkin is not what you are thinking. Dictionaries are allowed. No prizes will be given.

A "merkin" is a fake "beard" worn by medieval men, women and Badger around their sexual organs in order to reduce lice. First you burn off the hair with a hot coal held in tongs............ Don't have time to do the boring ones............. Best, Ray McCrary "Speed is Life; of course Luck and Altitude are helpful, too."

In a message dated 5/4/01 10:49:30 PM Pacific Daylight Time, mrbadger@home.com writes: > A firkin is a small barrel or any of several British units of capacity, usually equal to about 1/4 of a barrel or 9 gallons (34 liters) A gherkin is A small cucumber, especially one used for pickling. A merkin is a a "counterfeit hair for women's privy parts," and another dictionary calls it a "pubic hair wig." (for a lenghty explanation of the origin go to : http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a3_232.html and a jerkin is a close-fitting, hip-length, collarless jacket having no sleeves but often extended shoulders, belted and worn over a doublet by men especially in the 16th century. A short, close-fitting, often sleeveless coat or jacket, usually of leather. So there~! Derek, do you have an recent news on how Gerry Gougens is doing? Tnx Terry

Hi Terry. I spoke to Gerry again today at his home. He was doing pretty well and sounded very much like his old self but cancer is nasty stuff and he still has a long row to hoe before he's in the clear. Gerry is 76 years old but very resilient and strong as a bull so we'll just keep fingers crossed. Just in case anyone doesn't know, Gerry founded, owned, and operated Abingdon Spares for many years and has just undergone surgery for a malignant brain tumor. Once again, he would greatly appreciate a card to let him know folks are thinking of him at, GERARD GOGUEN RR-1 19 RESERVOIR AVE. WALPOLE NH. 03608 Doris tells me opening the mail is the highlight of his day. Thanks, Badger
