help! dead a18
This morning I went out to start the bike. It was about 25
degrees. Choke full on, she cranked a few times and started up. I
backed off the choke to get it to idle around 2k rpms and went to
suit up. The bike ran for a good couple of minutes and then
suddenly shut off. I went over to it and hit the starter, but it
wouldn't start again. I let it sit a minute or so and tried again.
Same thing. Shut the choke off, opened the throttle, tried again.
Nothing. Just the same steady turning over, but not catching at
all.
Desperate to get to work, and figuring that maybe it was just some
crud in the fuel that would work itself out once the bike was
running again, I tried bump starting it coasting down a hill.
Wouldn't catch.
The Clymer lists about 200 things to check. Hoping to prioritize
that list based on the symptoms (and based on the fact that I have
no warm garage to work in--only the yard).
BTW, if it matters, last weekend I checked the battery and topped it
off with distilled water. Rode the bike twice last week without
incident, and yesterday without incident. This is the first
mechanical trouble I've had in 3200 miles.

There's gas in the tank (little over half full). At one point I
also opened the tank cap and tried starting it with the cap open.
Didn't make any difference.
I don't know how to check if there's gas in the float chamber.

Is the gas on? If it keeps turning over then you know it's not the battery. Check the obvious stuff first.

There's a drain screw on the bottom right side of the bowl. Open that
and see if fuel runs out. If there is fuel in the bowl, drain it
until it stops (assuming you didn't modify the petcock), then try
starting the bike.

It's on run. I switched it to reserve to see if maybe there was
some debris in there or something. No change.

My vote is its an electrical issue. Check the emergency kill switch
on the handlebar. I think I remember that the bike will still crank
if that has been bumped to off, but I could be wrong. I sometimes
mix up behaviors of my bikes.
If that is not it, your kickstand or clutch switch could be acting
up in the cold.

I put the kill switch through its paces thinking it might be fritzy,
but no change. It doesn't turn over with the switch to off.
The sidestand switch is bypassed. I recently cleaned the clutch
switch and dielectric greased it, but will check it tonight.
