Yes, they can be welded, but you have to cut them off in order to remove the engine covers for any reason. Like I did to change the clutch. The best simple solution is to Helicoil the holes, the best heavy duty solution may be to fabricate a threaded metal insert, which will require cutting off the bottom of the box, chiseling out the remnants of the stripped captive nuts, fabricating an insert, welding it in place, and then welding the bottom of the box back on. I wonder if the 2008 model has a different / better footpeg mount? At 250 pounds of man, I have stripped the footpeg bolts out more than once. Twice, in the worst possible situations. Once, on the first day of a 7 day camping trip to Colorado, and once, three years later, at the top of Hancock Pass, in Colorado. Evidently Colorado makes footpegs strip out in my KLRs. Actually, it was on two different bikes, too.
