It must have been four years ago or so that someone tried runnung a siphon to the RH side of the tank. I forget the final verdict: either it didn't work too well, or it wasn't worth the trouble for the small amount of fuel it made available. You can always get a few miles by leaning the bike way over to the left.> > I don't know but the KLR petcock should not be taken lightly. Its not a > simple on-off switch. I've attached Skip Faulkner's Fuel Tank Mod, in Word (It's Word for
Mac, so tell me if you can't open it). I don't know Skip, but thanks
to him for the idea. Also, I think there MAY be a version with
pictures floating around on one of the KLR sites. I'll post it if I
find it.

Now you've done it, Don!
Don't you know that you're not supposed to explain that the Canadian gallon
is bigger than the US?
You've ruined the fun. You're supposed to explain our better mileage by
saying that the reason we get better mileage is because our gas comes
directly from the oil wells but the US gas gets watered down. I used to have
endless fun at the family's service station explaining all kinds of things
to tourists. I'm sure that some went home and wrote letters of complaint!
(VBG)
We used to get a lot of tourists come in and ask where they could go to find
gold. Now every kid pumping gas around here in the 1960's used to know where
you could go to pick up a couple of pounds of gold so they were asking the
right guy.
I used to look a bit confused and ask whether they wanted placer or
quartzite gold? They wouldn't know so I'd explain that quartzite gold was
found in solid rock and extracted by drilling and blasting while placer gold
was found in alluvial deposits in old water courses and could be extracted
by gold panning. The lights would come on and they'd say, "Yes, we want to
pan for gold!"
"Oh," I'd say, " The problem isn't in finding placer gold but finding black
magnetic sand. You see, placer gold is usually found in the presence of
black magnetic sand."
"Great ", they'd say, "Where can we find black magnetic sand?"
"That's no problem. Just go down to the corner there and drive straight down
to the stop sign. Don't turn off, go right down to the stop sign. It's a
couple of miles. Turn right and stay on that road. It will turn into a dike
along the river. Follow the dike until the road turns down toward the river
then you can park anywhere and walk out onto a gravel bar. Just walk around
until you find some sand which is pointing North."
The ones who laughed of got mad were one thing but the ones who thanked me
and drove of with a look of concentration really made me bust a gut.
Of course my Dad caught me a couple of times and kicked my butt. It was
still worth it. (VBG)

Not much of a mech person, but just took the valve apart this morning, not really that
complex, but would not want to do it without the help of old mr. Clymer. Seriously $30 is
never better spent than on those books(the schematic is probably also in the factory
manual-I havent looked at that since I got the Clymer). Be prepared to replace the O-rings,
the ones from the hardware store are too thick..As far as the reserve, I am no inventor but
it seems like way too much hassle to tap the right side of the tank. If you run out of
reserve, lay the bike down on the left side and you can get that extra juice..

favourite modifications - reserve gas on the right side???

Yup that's it. Skip - years ago - was an active contributor to this list. Because of the places I ride I was desperate for more reserve. When I heard Skip would be at the Moab rally I organized a tech session where a few of us installed the mod under his tutelage. I eventually took it off. Here's why: The line would bounce when the tank was half full or less. Then the flow of gas was interrupted and the engine could and usually would stutter. Plus, there was sometimes not enough suck to pull gas though the long line - remember no help from gravity. Anyway... The mod was more trouble than it was worth. Maybe JW will have better luck. To slightly change the subject, with a headwind forget counting miles as a reliable guide to what's left in the tank. Bogdan, who's now happy since he finally solved the problem and now has 1 1/4 gallons on reserve> In the Bigcee's KLR650 FAQs the following link in under known issues: > http://www.bigcee.com/faq/fuelmod.html I haven't read through it or > done it but it's a starting point. >
