They cost about $150 and prevent scratching your $1000 gas tank. As an owner of a GS and a KLR I couldn't agree more. I was on a 350km GPS ride 2 weeks ago and several riders completed it on KTM 950s. And yes this was real offroad, a mix of gravel, single track, and a one decent water crossing. All bikes were street legal and ranged from 400 to a lone 1200 GS that got damaged in the water crossing, see link. The GS was doing fine until then, big guy who is a good rider was on it and was going where I was on my KLR. No attitudes and everyone had fun. Biggest determining factor was skill, which is what I lack most!! For a good camparison of how bad big GS beemers are compared to to KLRs see what happened to Dustin and his 1150 GS when he tried to follow my KLR and I along the Rainbow Trail and into the Great Sand Dunes 3 weeks ago here in Colorado. Dustin did an amazing job considering what he was ridind, but the bike proved nearly impossible to handle in the sand. Seriously, you are on target, drill that stupid cap, pull it and back that needle out to say 2 ~2.5 turns from a gentle seat. Starts better, runs better (maybe even cooler) and that lean surge will go away.
