Check the water pump weep hole down at the bottom of the water pump. If you are losing fluid there most likely your ceramic water pump seal is out and needs to be fixed. If you have the stock skid plate you may not see it leaking on it but if you have a Moose type plate you will notice radiator fluid on it and sometimes smell it. You do need to fix this. I have had 2 go out. Some have said using car type antifreeze instead of motorcycle specific will make them do this (which I did in the past). Criswell Barnaby Robson wrote:

I believe I have a coolant leak at the waterpump seal (it might be the waterpump housing, but I doubt it). How hard is replacing this seal? If anyone has had a dealer do the work, about how much did it cost? My bike is a 2000 KLR, with only about 7500 miles. thanks! bill kramer g'ville, sc

On my first KLR, an A1, the seal was leaking when I bought it. I replaced it and it was fine until I sold it with 40k miles on the clock. The PO of my second KLR had the same trouble--3 times--when the bike was new. Some bright mechanic finally flushed the whole system to get rid of the crud that kept fouling the mechanical seal. Might be worth the effort to flush things out good before you put in a new seal. The job itself isn't hard, just take your time, follow the manual (or Mark B's write-up on Mark S-H's web site, and resist the urge to ham- fist it. We did one in the parking lot of a Mexican motel by flashlight with the tools at hand, so you know it's not open heart surgery. __Arden

What Mark said, and I would just reiterate one thing- The impeller comes off and back on with your fingers. It unscrews, and then screws back on, even though it is unthreaded because of the o-ring inside it. If you pull it straight off (or tap it straight on) you'll ruin the o-ring and then that wil leak instead of the water pump seal. I know this for an absolute fact, unfortunately. Don't take this as advice, just information only. My KLR's coolant pump seal started to drip when it was parked for almost two weeks in October 2002 during some unseasonably cool weather. It dripped a little most of the winter, then stopped in warm weather. I added a little distilled water to the reservoir early in the summer. No leaks all summer. It is starting to leak a little again now that the weather is cold, but so far, it's leaking less than last winter. Put more than 25,000 miles on the bike since it first started to leak. I have one of those 500,000 candle power (or something like that) rechargeable spotlights. Works well for checking the coolant level in the KLR after the reservoir becomes discolored enough you can't see the level any more. Hold the bright light in front, and look through the side opening. Otherwise, I have to remove the cap to see the level. If you don't have a rechargeable spot light, ask Santa for one. Allan A14
