coolant leak

Post by Barry Mcpherron » Tue Jun 06, 2000 12:49 pm

I rode in to work today and noticed I have a small amount of coolant runing down the front frame tube and collecting on my bash plate. I wonder if anybody else has seen this and can enlighten me on where the leak might be coming from. It's not much after a 15 mile ride in traffic, but I am a little worried about the ride home as it's going to be near 110F by this afternoon here in Phoenix. Thanks, Barry '91KLR650

coolant leak

Post by Charles MacKarness » Wed Aug 08, 2001 11:54 am

I have notice one or two drops of coolant on the floor under my bike, near the back of the engine, after it sits for a day or so. Riding it hard, heating it up or running it easy seems to make no difference in the amount or frequency of the drips. Could there be a typical, or common, problem here? I am thinking it may be the water pump bushing giving up the ghost, but I am under 10k miles and bushings worn to the point of failure does'nt seem normal. Rev. Chuck :^)>+

Did you mix water with your coolant ? This could accelerate the wear.

Hi Has anyone else experienced some coolant leakage ... I was looking to see where it was coming from but it seems to be coming from nowhere .. Maybe the actual coolant tank is punctured ? I checked the hose at the bottom and it seems fine .... ... anyway .. I've still got half a tank .. the other half is dried all over the bike. Barnaby. A16

Barnaby: Is the coolant residue on the left or right side of the bike? Is it just on the bottom of the engine or is the residue on surfaces above this? Some listers have reported heat from the exhaust system can melt the coolant reservoir tank resulting in the formation of small pinholes. John --- Barnaby Robson wrote:

Hi Barnaby, My bike also had a coolant leak. I checked the hoses, etc. What I finally found was that whoever assembled the bike cross threaded the cap on the coolant resevoir. Bill A15

Hi Bill, So .. it was a simple case of re-screwing, or did you need a new cap ? Barnaby. Subject: [DSN_klr650] Re: Coolant Leak My bike also had a coolant leak. Hi John, Thanks for the reply. The coolant is all over the right hand side of the bike from the bottom of the coolant tank to the skid plate, covering all areas in between. I'll check for contact with the exhaust ... OR, you could have the ever-common water seal leakage. Notice that Fred sells the seals and gaskets? Not that hard to fix, if that's what it is.... MNRon
