Twas I, not Zack, that wrote about breaking both beads... It depends
on the tire and the tube. With MT21s and heavy duty (4mm) tubes it's
_almost_ impossible to get the new tube in without breaking both
beads. I did it last time because I was willing to donate blood over
sweat in the attempt. (one bead broken = bloody knuckles, two beads
broken = much sweat). Mind you, I have rather large hands so YMMV...

I made my own using a nylon screw with threads to match inside valve stem threads. Drill a hole thru long axis, insert a length of weedeater monofilament, melt the ends so it won't pull thru, dremel the head of the screw to fit thru hole in rim. Nylon screw works well cuz it's easy to drill, easy to dremel and won't booger valve stem threads. Tom A15> is getting the valve stem back into the rim. A great trick I learned in the pits at the enduros is to put the tube
in the tire befoer you start to pry the first bead on. Put the valve
stem through the rim and VERY loosely fit the nut. The rim will sort
of be at an angle on top of the tire....pictures would be great but I
just changed my tube so it may be a while before I get to the next
one.

The other great tip is in removing a tire... Pop each bead off the
side of the rim where it is and push the rim into the center of the
tire, then you can just pry the tire right off!

With all this talk of tire repair I thought I'd point out that
REI-OUTLET.COM has Blackburn Mammoth Mountain bicycle pumps for $4.93.
This is a great pump to carry for emergencies. The address is way
too long to post here. Just look under Cycling Accessories.
