610 miles in a day

Post by Jim Hyman » Mon Jun 24, 2002 11:34 pm

Dave, Not to worry, I traveled 1200+ hours in 2 days when I left Seattle for Moab. Fully loaded KLR, Gripsters, stock seat, etc. No monkey butt. I've met Tumu & he's wimpy looking (145 lbs max) but he sure can hold his own while scarfing down Old Thumper ale. He does have excellent taste in TP selection. I'm in the minority, the stock seat is (marginally) OK. I use a large folded bath towel placed under my butt, sheepskin would be a bit better. I seem to recall several KLR riders that have covered 700 or more miles in one day. My preference is for 300 mile days, with frequent stops to smell the roses. I avoid highways as much as possible. Professor A9 Federal Way, WA. [USA] ps: It's the journey that counts, the destination is secondary. Life is a journey, enjoy the ride. ++++++++ Tumu replied:

Folks, On Saturday I rode the "SS Flexuous" in Alberta. Stock Seat, 1070 Miles. This is an annual event held by the Black Gold Beemers, and worth a try if you are feeling adventurous. David C

Excellent! Another LDRider. Not sure if the KLR650 is preferrable though, I've got a friend around here who runs a Ninja250 painted like a John Deere tractor who'd say us 650's are a bunch of pansies ;-) Todd (Springfield, VA)

Yup, left at noon on a Thursday and got there at 10am the following day (before resetting my watch to local time). I'm not saying it was fun (better than in a car) or that I'd relish doing it again, but it can be done. I now have the Sport Tour rebuilt seat and it helps a bit but I think I'm gonna run a sheepskin in the Alcan 5000. The 22 hours was total time from start to finish. Actual riding time was more like 19 hours. dat brooklyn bum

It's amazing what happens in the space/time continuum when you take a detour through the twilight zone. Professor ++++++++ Douglas Dick wrote:

Now hold on there! I have 33000 on my KLR Sis Fiddy and most of that is Highway miles, most of that time between 5-6K RPM. I've replaced the balancer chain and installed on of Jake's levers (anyone who doesn't is asking for it) cause the stock Kaw. POS lever let go. I'm really lucky it only bounces around in there a bit, and then came to rest in the bottom of the engine where the oil pick-up is. Now the cam chain is going to get replace at 40000 and if I'm asking for it (here we go) let me know collective. Now, we all want to know how your bike runs (power) after you get it broken-inn.
