Greetings, My '09 needs new tires, and looking for a reasonably priced 80/20 Pavement/Off-Road tire recommendation? It doesn't have to be cheap, but I don't want to spend $300 either...just a good value for the money for this type of riding.  What would you do? Thanks! John

JP-Is that 20% going to be rock, gravel, sand, or mud gravel roads or prairie gumbo-zo? Some tires are a lot better for some of the above. revmaaatin.

After many brands and designs of tires over the years with an '89, '00, and now '09, I went with the Heideneu K 60 Scout and have never looked elsewhere.   They have carried heavy loads on 4k trips with stability, managed tar snakes better than most, channeled water well in heavy rain without a hint of hydroplane, and dealt with sandy singletrack at 15psi as well as the D606. Wear resistance seems extra ordinary for a pretty aggressive tire.  The current set I bought from Fred last summer and have put about 6k on them and expect to do another 5k.  A buddy put some on his Strom and did Canada for a year managing 12k on the rear with the front still good.  Another friend got 10k on the rear of a KTM950 with the front still good.  The one thing the K 60 doesn't do well for me is mud of any significant depth. I have been very impressed with the Shinko 705s, blasting around the Southwest on an '08. That includes many, many hours of desert freeways at close to 100 degrees, dirt, gravel, some sand etc. (BLM lands and forest roads around the region). Predominantly dryer conditions, but I always felt secure even with strong cross winds and the occasional rainstorm and they lasted many miles. Not good in slushy, muddy snowmelt, but then I never really expected that from an 80/20. They also seem to be very reasonably priced. Korean made off of former Yokohama designs, if I recall correctly. I put a Shinko 700 on the rear, because I was impressed with the wear and tear but wanted a bit more off-road friendly, however my 705 is still on the front because it just won't die.

Still like the IRC GP110. Solid in the corners, predictable in the gravel and dirt. Don't chunk like the MT70, and not squirrely like the K270. Heinedau (sp) were solid but at twice the cost +/- and the last 2K you were riding on diminished though long lasting tread. 3.5 to 4K on the rears in Central Oregon cinders. YMMV. Todd

I love my heidenau k76' less aggressive than the 60's, more road friendly. If you really do 80 road and minor off road, these rule. They would stink in mud, but are fine in dirt. I am getting more and more off road, so in about 8,000 more miles I will switch to the 60's but you might prefer the 76's. Ps my RPM's dropped about 1500 for same speed as stock, and mpg went up too.
