Badgers auction

Post by Viv James TraX Interconnect (Pty.) Ltd » Tue May 09, 2000 7:17 am

Out of interest, I took a look at the "No Reserve" TC 4436 that Mr
Badger has on show. Seeing as who is selling it, I couldn't help
having a close look, bearing in mind his unique repair methods and
scant regard for correct colors etc. Apart from the white walls, a
quick inpection revealed the following and I am unable to resist
sharing it with the rest of you. Of course this could all be fixed in a
couple of weeks so it detracts little from the value of the car which
as Badger suggested, I am following with interest.

1. Wrong fog lamps
2. No Hooter?
3. Wrong head lamp lenses and glasses
4. Wrong grill color
5 Wrong color brake drums
6 Wrong mirrors and no screen mirror
7 Wrong steering wheel like many of us.
8 Wrong starter/choke knobs
9 Wrong color dash centre panel
10 Wrong scuttle color
11 Wrongly positioned voltage regulator
12 Wrong starter switch
13 Wrong fuel pipe clips
14 No radiator surround/bonnet anti chafe strip
15 Wrongly routed Carb overflows
16 Wrong holes in scuttle
17 Wrong wheel hammer (This is only a guess!)

With apologies and due respect to Mr Badger

Viv's observations are all totally correct but I would also like to
point out a couple of relatively important ones that were missed.
18. incorrect rear D-light/plate bracket.
19. missing MG emblem in center of spare wheel spinner.
On the plus side, the car has no Nissan parts fitted, it has the correct
number of threads per inch on the top, and it has a GOOD HEART (and
that makes up for a lot).
With kind thanks for the, oh so, expert observations. Badger

Derek - Whatcha doin' selling my TC on eBay......? Well, maybe not, but I scored 5 out of 17 - all down to a previous owner/restorer, I hasten to add. I've sorted most of the things I can do without throwing cash at it and without taking the car out of service. One of these days I'll pull it apart and do it properly. However that'll mean the car's not available for its primary purpose - wearing the roads out - so it ain't at the top of my list of current priorities.

1. Wrong fog lamps.......D'OH!
2. No Hooter?
3. Wrong head lamp lenses and glasses
4. Wrong grill color.......D'OH!
5 Wrong color brake drums
6 Wrong mirrors and no screen mirror
7 Wrong steering wheel like many of us.......D'OH!
8 Wrong starter/choke knobs
9 Wrong color dash centre panel
10 Wrong scuttle color.......D'OH!
11 Wrongly positioned voltage regulator
12 Wrong starter switch
13 Wrong fuel pipe clips
14 No radiator surround/bonnet anti chafe strip
15 Wrongly routed Carb overflows.......D'OH!
16 Wrong holes in scuttle
17 Wrong wheel hammer (This is only a guess!)

Other charges to be taken into consideration.......
Cream Cracker paint scheme......D'OH!
Bonnet underside painted black (as per firewall).......D'OH!
Brown interior.......D'OH!
Brown hood.......D'OH!
Wrong sidescreen covers, no trim strips.......D'OH!
Beige carpets.......D'OH!
Wrong brake light switch.......D'OH!
Chromed tank straps.......D'OH!
Rear indicators fitted by drilling holes in the wings.......D'OH! (the ultimate sacrilege)
TA/TB rear view mirror, with Lucas badge.......D'OH! (anybody want to swap?)
But, she's a cracker all the same.

Drive safely,
Dave

When I bought my TB a year ago, I believed, in my innocence and following
limited research, that it was fairly 'authentic'. I realised there were some
inaccuracies - wrong fog lamp, wrong steering wheel, no thirtilite etc. I
felt I could fix these!

After taking delivery I noted (based on my admittedly very limited knowledge
of Ts) some 22 significant variances from received wisdom. I have 'fixed'
about 10 of these. However, a small problem has cropped up. Firstly I am
getting more knowledgeable and so am finding more things 'wrong' myself.
Secondly every MG gathering I attend I get at least two 'T' experts who say,
'Very nice car, BUT....'. At the last meeting I said, unadvisedly, to a
colleague, 'I think I have the dashboard finally sorted, I just need to get
the correct light switch.' 'OH, comes the reply but your ammeter is a 30/0/30
ampere meter, that came from a truck.' I will be more careful next time!
This results on average in my getting two more items for my 'must fix' list
every meeting.

There are certain advantages I suppose. I can now respond positively to the
people who say, Well since you bought a fully restored car what an earth have
you got left to do?' I can respond that the search for authenticity will
take me for ever and will happily sit alongside the pleasure I am getting
from simply being behind the wheel. What a buzz!
