I had this same occurrence for many years. It began when I was persuaded to
replace all the seals and gaskets on the carbs. with silicon greased Viton
O-rings. The O-rings were not a howling success, and the jets hung up when the
cork seals were installed. (I guess I didn't presoak the seals in the right
fluid - it seems that there are a lot of preferences for soaking fluids out
there. I've even heard of people recommending Newcastle Brown Ale -What a
waste!)
Living in the climate that I do, I only had to use the choke on morning starts,
and no other time. But I just started to lift the drivers side of the bonnet,
and operate the choke and starter by hand, pushing up the jets after the car
started. I used to tell people that I was checking to make sure that the carbs
hadn't fallen off. Eventually, it corrected itself, which eliminated one source
of the greasy finger nail disease!
