There is a voracious virus being propagated thru email.

If you receive an email with subject: "I LOVE YOU", do not open it, but immediately delete and empty it.

With a group email list like ours, it could have serious consequences.

There is a voracious virus being propagated thru email.

If you receive an email with subject: "I LOVE YOU", do not open it, but
immediately delete and empty it.
Maybe yes, maybe no. Do you have any documented evidence that it performs
its dastardly tricks? The key is what the definition of "open" is. As it
comes to you with your regular mail from your ISP it has not been "opened"
as you can read it with no problem. The by word is to not "open" i.e., run
the attached .exe file which could be a virus. General guidelines are to not
open an .exe attached file from somebody you don't know.
There are several excellent virus hoax websites available. My favorite is
www.kumite.com which covers a large scope of virus reports, some fact and
some fiction. An hour on this site will do a lot to reduce virus paranoia.
In general, your chances of catching a virus (digital variety) is probably
like worrying about an airplane crash or getting struck by lightning.
Of course, one should always have a virus scanner - like fire insurance!

According to our TV news last night the 'I LOVE YOU' virus has been causing
havoc in the UK over the last few days.

I think perhaps this one should be treated seriously.

FYI

My Norton Antivirus program informed me that the email from "Martin"
entitled "oil pressure/silverstone had the KAKworm virus attached. Also,
the email from Peter Pleitner entitled "Re: oil pressure/silverstone" was
infected with the same one. Norton quarantined the emails. Looks like you
fellows may have picked up a little something in your travels or my virus
program is overly protective. ......Neil

Same conclusion as Neil. I use Norton Anti-Virus 2000, and my system warned me that Peter's and Martin's messages were infected by the KalWorm Virus [whatever that is]. That suggests that at least two of you are not operating and regularly up-dating an anti-virus program on your systems. The Norton program I am using on my small office network was not expensive and allows me to get the latest virus information automatically from the software vendor's web-site at regular intervals. If you have not got such a program operating, you should get one today to protect your own records, and also to avoid distributing viruses to others.. Mike Card TC-8233 Surrey, England

A free antivirus program is available from Computer Associates, Inc. . This virus program is updated every few days. The updates take about 5 minutes to download the initial program a bit longer. There is no charge for the program or the updates.

Like most viruses, it affects Windows machines only.
