TC exhaust system

Post by CFritz7001@aol.com » Thu Apr 27, 2000 9:01 am

Hi, Friends,
I'm afraid that the muffler on my TC is near the end of its life after
over 150k miles of service. Can any of you comment on any of the
after-market systems? I'm tempted to go to one of the stainless steel jobs,
but if I could find one of the originals, that would be equally tempting
(considering how long mine has lasted!). Do the SS ones fit, and sound, like
the originals???

Carl Fritz

Carl:

I have sold a lot of the S/S exhaust systems. They look and stay nice
looking, and sound just like the original. Even my 48 Y saloon has a TC S/S
exhaust system on it. It was put on at the time of a complete restoration ,
which was finnished in 1979. Here it is 21 years later, and still looks and
sounds like new.

Cheers:

I agree with what Skip says to Carl. I also have a S/S exhaust system for my 1946 TC. It looks and stays nice and sounds like the original one,

I need a new exhaust system for my TC. Who supplies a good product?
Will the ones offered by Moss and Abingdon Spares fit? I recall a
discussion a few months ago about exhaust pipes which did not fit. Is
stainless steel the way to go? Thanks.

Jack I bought a Moss UK stainless steel system about 18 months ago. System made by "Bell" here in UK. As far as I can tell it is an accurate reproduction of the original, including the larger engine pipe vs the smaller tail pipe. [Why did MG do that?] It fitted perfectly. Mike Card TC8233

Look on the Octagon Car Club site:
http://www.mgoctagoncarclub.com/spares/exhaust.htm
The prices are generally the best as the Club does not look at
achieving the mark up generally needed by a trader & if you did have
any problems, the Club will give technical advice - try that from
Moss! At the moment its about $1:50 to the .
The system fitted my car OK, but I agree with Mike - Why the small
dia tail pipe?
Were MG criticised about exhaust noise? I seeem to remember that the
Singer Le Mans specials had to reduce the tial pipe diameter to
quieten the noise.

I purchased a "Falcon" stainless steel system . If I recall correctly, it
came from Abingdon Spares. I needed to disconnect it about a a year and a
half after I installed it to change the gasket where it goes into the exhaust
manifold (I had not installed it properly) and everything unbolted very
easily. BUY STAINLESS!

I bought a stanless steel falcon some years ago, I fit it easily and
properly, if works well and sounds well too, no problems connected in those
past years.
bye.

I took my TC to a local muffler shop and they fitted a Jaguar muffler and I
don't know what kind of tail pipe to my exhaust pipe. Fit nicely and sounds
fine. And the price was right!

TC Exhaust System

Greetings To All,

I am installing my exhaust system and have attempted to research the topic
from previous threads and other publications. However, questions remain.

What was the original configuration of the exhaust system? Here s what I
know, starting from the exhaust manifold:

1. Original installation order is: Manifold w/ 3 - 10mm threaded studs,
exhaust gasket, cupped washer, triangular yoke bracket fitted on exhaust
pipe and then 3 brass hex nuts. The first problem is a tradition exhaust
leak from this area. My parts have excess (1/8 ) slop between the wall of
the cupped washer and flange on the exhaust pipe. This is due to different
standards of tolerance between different manufacturers of exhaust pipe and
washer. Solutions in previous threads:

a. Bolt together as stated with some type of liquid weld between washer
and flange.
b. Throw away the cupped washer and bolt together remaining parts with
exhaust flange against copper gasket only.
c. Throw away washer, then bolt temporarily together, spot weld flange
to triangular yoke, dismantle, permanently weld and the machine flange down
level with triangular washer and reinstall.
d. Throw cupped washer away and instead use a donut gasket which is
the one used on the MGB system.

To me, it looks like option is pretty simple. Is there anything else I
missed? Why is such a simple system plagued with chronic problems?

2. Next problem. From the manifold towards the muffler mid-way there is a
tabbed bracket. Does this bolt direct to a bolt on the bell housing. It
looks as if there should be an intermediate tab bolted to the bell housing
and then the down pipe bracket bolts to it. My guess is stock steel about 1
- 2 long with a 5/16 hole for the bolt to bell housing and then a 3/8
hole for bolt to tab on down pipe. What is correct?

3. Down-pipe bolts to the muffler with a gasket in between. This is ok

4. Muffler bolts to frame with 4 5/16 BSF bolts. This is ok.

5. Tail pipe connects to muffler. What was the original method of
connection? I assume a U-clamp around 1 diameter. However, neither Moss
nor Abingdon list such an item. Was a clamp not needed due to the rear
clamp hold the pipe into the muffler?

6. Final attachment has a P clamp bolting to the frame at rear of frame
w/ 5/16 BSF bolt. There was a previous thread that seemed to indicate that
the P clip was somehow attached to the bottom of the gas tank strap. Any
comments please?

It may be best to respond directly to me because I know this has been
discussed before and I am sure there will be a multitude of techniques. I
will then consolidate info and post a final article on the exhaust system.

Thanks for your comments.
