It's good to see someone your age interested in these old MGs. I was
several years younger than you when I got my first TC, but the TC was
still relatively young (and relatively inexpensive) then too. I'm 56 now.

I was 24 when I bought Betsy ('48 TC) as my first car in 1953, so I guess
that makes me working on year 71. First mechanical work I did on her (or any
other car for that matter) was overhauling her carbs.

Awini, I bought my first TC in 1953 at the age of 19. Kept it for 13
fixed it,showed it, raced it and sold it when the family grew to big for
the car. Bought my present TC as a basket case in 1979, restored it and
am still driving it. This weekend we will go together with our club the
TC Motoring Guild for a two day meet in the North San Diego area. I am
currently 66 years old some of our other member attending are Harvey
Schnaer who has his TC from almost new and is over 80 and Joe Douglass
who did purchase his TC new in 1950. Your never too old for a TC.

Geez, Terry, that requires math, a working memory, and more cups of coffee
than I've had so far this morning, so pardon me if I'm vague. :-)
Exactly what years was I TSO Tech Editor? I don't remember any more, but
it was from the early 1970s through the early 1980s, more or less. That
would have put me in my thirties, also more or less.

I never claimed to be an expert on any of the things I wrote about, and
said that many times in my TSO columns. What I did claim was the ability
find information when I needed it, a mechanical bent that made it easy to
put what I found out to practical use on T-Types and other cars, and the
willingness to sit at an [expletive deleted] manual typewriter long enough
to write about it. If we'd had personal computers in those days it would
have been a LOT easier!

My interst in cars goes back to before I was old enough to drive one
(legally, at least). At first it was hot rods, but swerved off into the
world of BritCars when in high school (1959 or so) a friend and I acquired
a hot-rodded M.G. TD for almost nothing. It had a flathead Ford V-8, Ford
tranny and rear axle, and it was a rolling disaster, but that's what got
me interested in T-Types.

Awini,

I'm another oldster here - 55 - but I didn't get my TC until I was 46 - it
was a basketcase then and I've slowly been working on it's restoration.

That's not to say that I didn't start my love affair with the TC many, many
years ago. I was 7 and living in El Paso, Texas, when I saw my first one.
Our neighbor was in the Air Force and brought a red TC over from England -
this was back when neighbors were neighbors and he delighted in giving us
all rides around the block in it.

I owned my first one, a '49 TC (also red), when I was stationed over in
Thurso, Scotland. I remember the first time I saw it running around town, a
fellow American driving it. I swore I'd own it as soon as he transferred.
I paid the grand sum of 90 pounds for it (at that time about $250). I drove
it for a couple of months until the new club on the base opened, got a bit
inebriated, tried to drive it through a fence, and sold it the next day.

I never lost my fascination with it though and when it was time for me to
retire from the Navy I found the one I own now in Fort Walton Beach,
Florida. It was all apart and hadn't seen the light of day for about 7
years. Today it's almost together (a little painting left on the bonnet)
and soon to be on the road.

Good luck with yours,

Gene

I'm 55 now and always wanted a MGT, but never had the good fortune to purchase one until about a year and a half ago. I bought a '37 TA unfinished project that is probably still years away from being back on the road.

Hi all,
It was indeed quite a pleasant surprise to see that so many people responded
to my earlier post regarding age,now that i know more about the people
writing in,i feel a more personal involvement with the list.It is
interesting to see that most of you bought your MGs for nostalgic reasons,it
was also revealing to see that some of you might collect stamps and even own
more than one old car.
The first MG i can recall was the picture of my father in his TC in the
fifties,it replaced a B.S.A Gold Star, on which he broke both his legs in a
crash,he had the MG till he married my mother, and that was his last two
seater. As a child I could recognise an MG even before i knew of a company
called Ferrari!!,till the early eighties one could see an occasional MG on
road here in Delhi, and i decided at that time that i will own one
someday, but most MGs had disappeared by the time i learned to drive,in
1989/90 at the age of 17,my father gave me his Karmann-Ghia which i fixed
and used as my daily driver for a few years,in 1992 at age 19 i fixed my
great grandfather's 1930 Studebaker tourer, which i still drive sometimes on
weekends but since we owned both these cars from new,and they were always in
covered storage, they were not very difficult to recommision,I bought my
first old car in 1994,a 1931 Chrysler CM6 tourer similar to the
Studebaker,it was running when i bought it so i restored it cosmetically, but
i sold it in 1996 because two large american cars need a LOT of space, and
besides,i preferred the 4 litre Studebaker to the 3/12 litre Chrysler
engine,then i came across a dilapidated 1927 Austin 12/4 roadster,i acquired
this car because my father had owned it for a while in the sixties, finally
in December of 1999 i found the MG i always wanted,it too is a basket
case, but now im an MG owner at last, but when i get to drive it, only time
will tell.

P.S:i also had a 1951 Pontiac Six saloon as my daily driver for a few months
in 1994/5, my current daily driver is an Opel Astra, because it has air
conditioning and a CD player.
